Editorial Reviews

Digitally remastered and expanded edition of this 1980 album from the former 13th Floor Elevators' mainman. Featuring the original 10 tracks plus two additional Erickson originals from the period. An insight into the 'scrambled brain' of this Rock genius' bizarre and often brilliant solo career. Obsessed with sci-fi and horror images, this gritty gem covers Satan, Lucifer, Alligators, Vampires, Demons and Zombies along the way. With extensive sleeve-notes and an introduction by MOJO editor Phil Alexander.

This is a reissue of the 1980 CBS album released only in the UK and the Netherlands with the addition of two tracks (`The Wind and More' & `Bloody Hammer') that were cut from original. This version is the initial offering from a joint venture of MOJO magazine and Cherry Red Records intending to release albums featuring in the "Buried Treasures" feature in the magazine. (It should be noted that this album is being released at the same time as two other discs previously issued by MOJO as monthly gifts. Both are covers of well-known albums: `Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' and `The Wall.')

All of these pieces have been available for many years on various and sundry releases of varying degrees of quality and completeness. To be sure, this record has the highest quality of production, allowing one to listen to the songs in a manner not previously available. I mention this, because there are two groups who will read this review: those familiar with Roger Kynard (Roky) Erickson and his work with the 13th Floor Elevators, other bands and solo work; and those more-or-less unfamiliar with it. The former will know these songs but are unlikely to have had the opportunity to hear them this way. The latter will come upon this work, accepting the quality but also need to understand some of the background.

At the time of its release, Erickson had been out of Rusk Sate Hospital for the Criminally Insane - where he had been sent as part of a plea deal to avoid prison for drug possession - for about eight years. His time at Rusk included electroshock therapy and Thorazine treatments. While this was not good for his mental state, it must e noted that all blame cannot be placed at the feet of the cops and docs.

The sound jumps out of the speakers on this reissue featuring these great tracks which I already had but have never heard this clear and crisp before. Oh, and if Roky comes to your town, go see him. Backed by a band called the Baskerville Hounds or something he absolutely killed at Maxwell's in Hoboken a few weeks ago.

Great album! Recently watched "Your gonna miss me" so I had to get this. I think it is great that Mojo magazine re-released it. Cd was sealed and in perfect condition. thanks
