"Cool as Hell", June 16, 2005

Holy smokes, I found this disc at Tower records the other day and thought to myself , wow, these guys finally made it! Unfortunately not in the way boring drivel like Usher or overrated rappers like Eminem made it. But to know that their releases are no longer to be found available only from the back of their (now ill-fated and toured-out) Astro Van makes me happey these guys are still going at it. See, when I lived in Pittsburgh, PA, I'd see Grand Buffet every chance I got after I first witnessed them play a music festival in 1999. There was never a dull moment at a Grand Buffet show because this dynamic duo of beatsmiths/rappers known as Grape-a-don and Lord Grunge were there to deliver the goods 1000 percent. I've always wondered why these painfully talented guys have never made it bigger. Thing is, GB aren't sweatin' it . These guys don't fit into any slickly marketable category or genre, and that's how they've always been and that's how they like it. The cd is just a taster of the surreal lyrical landscape that Grand Buffet reside in. If you don't like hooks that are catchy as hell, infectious beats with a nice DIY lo-fi feel, and lyrics that would make Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory seem more common and pedestrian that your local Wal Mart, then it's best you stay away and go back to watching MTV. As for the viewing part, the dvd is again a mere taster (though packed with plenty of footage) of what these guys are capable of. The live footage, videos, and interviews (don't believe a word Grape-a-Don/Mr. Pennsylvania says) showcase the talent, sense of fun, and sometimes pure absurdity that is the world of Grand Buffet. So, pick this low-priced offering from Grand Buffet up if you're tired of the same 'ol same 'ol and ready for something a bit more adventurous. Even better, in addition to your purchase , do yourself a real favor and don't miss them when they come around your way live, alright Gold? The name of the band says it all holmes. Just make sure to bring your fanny pack and a hefty napkin.

They're like the thinking man's Bloodhoung Gang. Well, maybe not, they're really not like anyone. But they put on one of best live shows you'll ever see, they don't mess around. And they're nice dudes too. These guys seem to just get better and better with each album, and Five Years is no exception. If they play your town, don't miss them!

the only band on jesus's ipod., June 19, 2006

so i'd only heard about grand buffet until yesterday, when I saw them perform live in pittsburgh, with gil mantera's party dream. holy cow. these guys put on the best live show I have ever seen. grand buffet is all about shouting hilarious improvised monologues between their hip-hop commentaries, and the party dream jams out 80's style in excellent spandex costumes and masks. The bands basically get plastered, get naked, writhe around, dance, hump each other, and fall over, and it all sounds amazing. Sure, its crude and maybe rediculous, but they have a great time, and its infectious. The crowd loves it, and I couldn't stop dancing or laughing throughout the whole set. The music is great, the album is no doubt excellent, but whatever you do, do NOT miss the live show.
