Great heavy-duty hiking shoe,
I'd actually give them 4-1/2 stars, but they weren't perfect so I'll give them 4.
I bought a pair of these last summer before my wife and I took a 4-month cross country national park tour. We hiked between 5-20 miles a day about 4 or 5 days a week the whole time, so we put some serious miles on the shoes on a wide variety of terrain. They lasted ALMOST the whole trip. With about 2 weeks to go, the heel cushioning broke down and started giving me some pretty bad blisters, but that was on the foot that I have a 3/16" lift in, so I don't completely fault the shoe - the foot without the lift never had any problems. I ran into a woman on a train in Rocky Mountain Nat'l Park who also had 5.10 insights, and also loved them, and also had the heel wear through eventually. More about the shoe - by far the best gripping shoe I have ever worn. The traction is unbelievable, and they fit tightly to your foot for a nice solid connection. This makes a great hiking shoe, but maybe not the best lounging around or everyday shoe. I loved hiking in them, but I also loved taking them off at the end of the day. I have narrow feet, and they fit me well. I think with the full length lacing, they could probably accommodate a wider foot as well, though I don't know that for sure. Also, they seem true to size. The tight fit and good traction was great for scrambling, and I never wanted more support even on very rocky terrain, though I never carried a pack over about 20-lbs. My wife had a pair of Keens that she thought were very comfortable, but the sole started coming apart on hers before any sign of wear on my shoes. Also, I clearly had better traction and better support than she did. I'm buying another pair for this summer, although I will be working all summer instead of bumming around hiking :-(

This review is from: FiveTen Men's Insight Hiking Boot (Apparel)
The FiveTen's Insight Hiking Shoe is a robust and protective walking shoe that performs well on a variety of surfaces. The cushioning seems to hold up pretty well, and the footbed is deep enough to accomodate orthotics and other shoe inserts. The nubuck outers shed water reasonably well, and the full length lacing system enables a pretty snug fit.
Like some other FiveTen shoes, the Insight seems to run about a half-size large. Their appearance is nice enough to pass as a casual shoe in an informal place like Alaska. The Insight is highly recommended, especially to those who have found good fit with other FiveTen shoes. |
