Book Description

John Faron is a natural-born tinkerer who can apparently fix anything.

But when he's forced by the actions of a madman to make an unthinkable choice,
he soon finds that the one thing he can't mend, is his own broken heart.

Sixteen year old Johnny has a dream. He wants to build an engine that can get a hundred miles to the gallon.

While working in his grandfather's fix-it shop, he meets Felicia Delgado, and the young girl steals his heart.

Meanwhile, there's a killer hunting down young women and getting away with murder.

Years later, when circumstances conspire to tear Johnny and Felicia apart, John is rescued from heartache by a new love.

With his dream in sight and his new love at his side, John is ready to put the past behind him and marry.

However, the killer now has him in his sights and seeks revenge against John for exposing him to the police.

When the killer strikes, his attack leaves John unscathed, but places both his new love and Felicia square in the ravenous maw of imminent death.

With a daring, near suicidal act, John may be able to save one of the women he loves, but which one?

Will he sacrifice Felicia, or choose to save the woman who brought him back from despair, a woman who loves him more than life.

It's an unthinkable choice and its resolution will shape John's life forever.

4.0 out of 5 stars A heart, a dream and a boy coming of age... March 30, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The Fix-it-Man tells the story of sixteen year old Johnny, who meets Felicia, a thirteen year old girl, when she brings him her broken heart to fix while he is working in his grandfather's fix-it-shop. That drew me right into Johnny's story. How could it not? Over time, Johnny falls in love with Felicia, with a love that is so deep that it will affect everything he does in his life.

Johnny has two dreams. One is to marry Felicia, and the other is to develope an engine that gets 100 miles to the gallon of gas. We follow Johnny's life to find out if either, or both, come true. This isn't the easiest story I have ever read and I don't pretend to understand some of the decisions Johnny makes in his life, but I like Johnny. He is a good but flawed man just trying to keep his dreams alive.

The author has done a very good job of telling Johnny's story. I kept trying to put my Kindle down to do chores, but found myself running back to read a little more. I will reread this book again because I rushed through it the first time trying to find out what happens to Johnny, and if his dreams come true. I think that this is the hallmark of an author who can tell a good story. Some books I can savor while reading. This one wasn't one of those. This book had me so invested in wanting Johnny's dreams to come true that I couldn't savor it. I had to hurry to find out what happened on the next page, in the next chapter.

The author gifted me this book, but I would have been happy to buy it. It is a wonderful story of a young man who grows up just trying to make the best decisions he can while following his dreams. Johnny truly tries to be "the fix-it-man" and I think he succeeds. I really enjoyed this book. It is a keeper and one I will be rereading and recommending.

5.0 out of 5 stars not my kind of book but.... April 2, 2011
By 317537
This is not the type of book I normally read but I once again found myself putting off things that needed to be done to read this book. Donald Wells is an excellent writer. His other book, Double of Nothing was another book I could not put down.I prefer a slow moving feel good book, this was totally not like that. There is something new happening in every chapter, and at times I really disliked some of the characters in the book. But, having said that it was a book that I just couldn't put down. I am not sure what category to put this book in, it was a romance with suspense with some mystery.

4.0 out of 5 stars interesting reading April 12, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a sweet story of true love with a bit of murder mystery mixed in. I found myself wanting to know what happened next. This story was not as indepth a mystery as I would normally read, but it held my attention and I looked forward to knowing what might happen next in the story. This was the first book I had read that Donald Wells had written, but it will not be the last! I enjoyed the book and look forward to seeing what Mr. Wells presents in his next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not what I was expecting... June 19, 2012

This book is definitely nothing I was expecting. From the beginning of this book I got drawn in to the story, although parts of it seemed to take a while to get to, I'm one of those readers who likes all the action up front and not the go around. I fell in love with young Felicia and Johnny right from the first couple of chapters, their love as they grew put me back in my childhood. There are twists and turns in the novel that you don't necessarily expect to happen, especially the last 1/3 of the book, even though there are some parts of the plot that a person can guess at what's going to happen, it is still worth the read.

5.0 out of 5 stars I was unprepared for this book May 26, 2012
By Vanessa
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I couldn't have known... There was no way I could have possibly have known from looking at that awful cover how freakin amazing this book is. I cried like I was the one that had to choose between the two people I loved more than life. I got so angry with the choices that were made but at the end everything was as it should have been. Do yourself a favor and read it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A genre-defying story that's hard to put down November 14, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This story was not my typical choice for reading material. The description mentions a love triangle of sorts, and I usually shy away from those kinds of tales. I am glad that I gave The Fix-It Man a chance. The story is well written and doesn't seem to be tied to any particular genre. There are elements of romance, but they are well done and only occasionally do they get too sappy. There is some action, nothing over the top, enough to keep things interesting. There is also a bit of a police mystery buried in this story, even if the solution can be a bit obvious to a seasoned reader. Finally, it has a bit of sci-fi (as far as the idea of a 100MPG engine goes)which I found quite interesting.

I'm not sure what it was about this story that really spoke to me, but somehow I found myself unable to put my kindle down. Its a tale of humanity, examining our flaws and our triumphs, hidden withing this story about a kid who likes to fix things.

EDIT: Since leaving this review the author has changed the cover of the book to a picture of a man lying on a bed next to a rose. I personally think the new cover looks like it belongs on a trashy romance novel (which this story is not) and I suggest the author make further revisions to the design.
