A NEW VAMP'S IN TOWN!,
By
This review is from: The Fixer (Paperback)
THE FIXER, by Jon F. Merz, is a fresh look at the eternal world of vampires. The protagonist of the story, Lawson, serves as a "Fixer" - born to the task of maintaining the delicate balance between the vampire and human communities, which are hopelessly entangled, yet essentially separate.Together with the mysterious Talya, a former KGB assassin, Lawson battles Cosgrove, a power-crazy, rogue vampire who plans to invoke an ancient blood demon to help him shred the fabric of vampire society - and all of civilization. Merz knows how to tell a story effectively. His style is refreshingly clean, richly textured, and unpretentious. The book is a delight to read and easy to follow, throughout story twists and fast action. His characters are well developed and believable; you'll care about what happens to them. Merz tells an excellent story, which is well-paced and nearly impossible to put down. He wraps this story in a time of gangsters and celebratory decadence, and does it well, so that the setting is comfortably genuine, and the details ring true. As I finished THE FIXER, thoroughly pleased with the ending, I wished desperately that I had another delight from Merz to read. Good news - we can look forward to a Lawson vampire series! The second book is THE INVOKER. So grab a copy of both books as soon as you can, folks! I think we're gonna be seeing a LOT of Jon Merz in the future. {Just think how pleased you'll be that you bought first printings of the series.} In a nutshell: THE FIXER is a great read and well worth the purchase price. It deserves a place on your bookshelf.

Hard-boiled vampire noir,
By
This review is from: The Fixer (Paperback)
Fixer is kind of book that you just can't stop reading!Merz's debut novel is awesome dark fantasy adventure with unique and unforgettable hero, Lawson. Lawson is the fixer.Fixers are vampires charged with the duty of executing rogue vampires who break the balance. The Balance is the line between humans and vampires and it's what keeps the world of vampires hidden from humanity.Lawson is great as what he does which is good as he must face again his archenemy, Cosgrove.Cosgrove is a truly evil vampire who seeks to destroy the vampire council raise a vampire god; all in his plot for world domination! Lawson must use all of his wits, strength and agility against enemy who is stronger than him and he is falling in love is human assasin named Talya who also wants to Cosgrove dead! Merz's novel gives us a scenic tour of Boston as our hard-boiled hero with the help of retired, fixer named Zero must stop Cosgrove's conspirary. The plot twists are brilliant as our hero finds that he doesn't know who to trust and including his heart!Merz's action sequences are great as he describes hand to hand combat, chases and some unique weapons.Fixer is also great because the author has the ability to destroy some of the myths concerning vampires like: they are not immortal but they live for centuries and they can walk in daylight.Merz's also does his research into the world of assasins and spies. I want the next Lawson's adventure!

A Terrific First Novel!,
By
This review is from: The Fixer (Paperback)
THE FIXER marks an impressive debut from this Boston author. Vampires, spies, lust, it's got a bit of everything! The writing is smooth and fluid, so it makes for a very satisfying read. This book is a fun ride, and I can't wait til the next installment is published. I'm a forever fan!

Lock and Load,
By
This review is from: The Fixer (Paperback)
In The Fixer, author Jon F. Merz doesn't spend 10 pages of flowery purple prose describing the texture of fabrics or every minute detail of a vampire's bedroom. There are no slow and boring build ups in which nothing happens for several chapters.Jon F. Merz pulls the trigger of a starter pistol and BANG! The Fixer is off on a non-stop, action packed race. From the first page to the last. The Fixer is about a vampire named Lawson with a special job: he's called a "Fixer." When vampires go against the rules set forth by the "Council," which governs vampires, Lawson "fixes" the problem. But when an old enemy named Cosgrove begins a bloody rampage with the intent of rising to world power and enslaving humans, Lawson has his work cut out for him. Cosgrove is the vampire who almost ended Lawsons career. And his life. ...For those of you who like comparisons, The Fixer is like Forever Knight meets Die Hard.

Awesome book,
This review is from: The Fixer (Paperback)
When I opened this book, I believed to get the typical horror story. I was wrong, this book is filled with moving action from the start to the end. This book contains a fantasy, action, and a touch of humour. The best thing that I enjoyed about this book is that it is written in first person narration.

Vamp Noir,
By
This review is from: The Fixer (Paperback)
Take the underworld of the 40s film noir and mix it with the comic book Blade, and the result will be something that closely resembles Jon F. Merz's The Fixer. This books marks the promising start of a new series which will appeal to anyone who is tired of the goth-chique vampires of Anne Rice. The novel is fast-paced and very atmospheric. You are thrown into the noir world which you saw so often in the 40s crime films. Lawson reminded me a little of the Bogarts of that era, only with more muscles and with a badder, more sarcastic attitude. Although the books lags a little in its central part (Merz gives us too much background info on Lawson; he could have stretched it out over the next few books), the rest of a the book is great fun. The wry, sarcastic humour and the often funny situations elevates this book over the B-style novel it could easily have become. The Fixer isn't mind blowing, but it is a great read that will keep you entertained until its very last page.

Couldn't put The Fixer down!,
By Michael Corcoran (Boston) - See all my reviews

I couldn't put this book down. I'm anxiously awaiting the second book. This is a fun read with some great characters. From the fight scenes to the character dialog I was sucked in. It's a great perspective and twist on this genre! Should be on the Big screen. Would be a great movie!

LOADS OF FUN,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Fixer (Paperback)
Dark nights, funky bars, guns, lust and longing, sudden death...Bogart with fangs! WOW this is a lot of fun. A little willing suspension of disbelief goes a long, long way. I lovingly refer to this kind of book as an "airplane" read, because it's just such flat-out escapism. Noir basted with vampire lore and horror. Try it, you'll like it. Merz is here to stay.
