Great book for Texans and those wishing they were Texans!,
This review is from: Fixin' To Be Texan (Paperback)
We gave this book to our friend from Germany to help better understand this "big ol'" state and the language while she was visiting. We found ourselves reading it and agreed with everything we read. Being Native Texans, we found this book the best book about Texas that we have ever read...and I have read a "mess of" books. Plus it has one of the best Texas jokes I've ever seen about why the chicken crossed the road. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to know more about Texas and the people smart enough to live there.. or crazy enough.I'm fixin to buy me my own copy of the book.

Helen Bryant has summed up everything you need to make the transition from being "from someplace else" to being a Texan, all in a compact and witty book. I lived in Houston and San Antonio for 17 years and I'm fixin to go back (from California) so I thought I'd better brush up. I feel ready, now.
After I finished the book I wrapped it up and gave it to friends, native Southern Californians who are soon to make Fort Worth their home. If you are bound for Texas, read this book first!

So true, so true!,

I chuckled all the way through this book as I was eatin' my chicken-fried steak, swiggin' a beer and swattin' at one of them big, flyin' cockroaches. Helen knows all of us a little too well, and she's the only one I know with bigger hair than I got. If you don't like this book, well...yawn yoan.

I bought this book for my mom, a proud Texan who hasn't lived there since shortly after she got married, some 50 years ago. But she related to everything in this book and laughed so hard she couldn't talk. Over the years, I've bought my fussy mom countless presents, but this is the first one I felt she really liked.
Even as a non-Texan, I found the book to be hilarious (my mom called me up and read the whole thing to me over a few nights). I don't even like Texas (too hot and buggy for my taste), but after hearing this book, it kind of made me want to move there! This would be a GREAT present (or gift to yourself) for anyone who loves Texas, anyone from Texas, and anyone about to move there (fixin' to be Texan).

A Yankee Girl's take on "Fixin' to be Texan",

This review is from: Fixin' To Be Texan (Paperback)
My husband and I just moved to Texas and my dad bought us this book as a gift. We both read it cover to cover and it truly was a fun and entertaining read. We moved to Dallas, Texas, where alot of her advice on being a cowboy, dress, style, and culture is alittle outdated and no longer up to date with current Dallas culture. The book was still great to learn about the different facts and statistics (including those things that EVERY Texan is supposed to know (no beans in chili, the football phenomenon).
There is a whole chapter on talking Texan and how to slur your words and elongate vowels. It was fun to practice and try to match the accent examples she gave. The author also mentions places of interest, some history on the area, and all about the food (Tex Mex, Beer, Mexican & alike). I would recommend this fun, quick read to anyone moving to the great lonestar state or anyone who is considering making a move out here. By the way, we are no longer "fixin'" to be Texan- we are here and just loving every moment!

I am one on those people who is trying to get to TX as fast as I can, but I am stuck here in Tennessee until my son turns 18. This book offers a humorous look at life--Texas Style!! My favorite chapters are about food and pick-up trucks!! And there is a fun quiz at the end of the book!! It keeps thoughts of the LONESTAR state close to my heart and makes me want to head out West!! I recommend this book for anyone who loves the state of TEXAS!!
