Fizik Microtex Soft Touch Bar Tape,
This review is from: Fizik Bicycle Bar Tape (Sports)
Outstanding bar tape. In thirty years of cycling, the Fizik tape is the best I've found. Plenty of length. Moderate thickness. It's grip is relentless, even when wet.
This tape is intended for a thinner application -- I prefer thinner tape, and I can't stand sponginess, so I put some stretch on the tape when wrapping. You can wrap without as much stretch if you like a little extra thickness. Very tough and much easier to care for and clean up than cork. If you like white bar tape, this is the tape to get. I've always been die-hard "black bars," but actually tried and tolerated the white tape for a while, because it was easier to keep clean. Back to black, and there is no substitute. The icing on the cake is the very unique textured look and feel of this tape. Really looks good, no sheen, but without being too monochrome. The texturing gives the bars and the bike a very "high end" look and feel. My absolute highest recommendation.

The Best,

The best bar tape. Lasts twice as long as Cinelli. The adhesive is really tough. A little short.

Hard to remove.,
This review is from: Fizik Bicycle Bar Tape (Sports)
The tape looks great, but if you've had it on for any considerable amount of time and want to replace it, plan on spending 3 or 4 hours removing it. The adhesive causes the small amount of padding to separate from the tape, sticking to your bars. The gooey residue resists solvents. To avoid scratching your bars you will not use a file, but will use your fingernails for a good hour-and-a-half. That's the left side. Another hour-and-a-half on the right side. Then you'll spend another hour (or perhaps days) returning the new tape and exchanging it for a different brand because you will never want to go through that again.

Excellent quality bar tape,

The Fizik tape is easy to install and there is enough tape to wrap even 46CM bars. I found the grip to be excellent and the tape is durable so far. I would suggest using electrical friction tape as a base layer and the Fizik will stay where it is wrapped.

Just Amazing,

This tape is amazing. This tape is moderately thin. It's perfect for those who like a thickness between electrical tape and cork tape (me). I commute 30 miles round trip five days a week, and I hate the spongy, unsure feeling cork gives me after five or ten miles. Unlike cork, it doesn't force you to hang on to the handlebar harder. It feels like a nice tennis racquet tape. Amazing!

I've installed several brands of cork tape ("gel" and non-gel) as well as some faux leather tape (Torelli Moda Chunky) and this Microtex is by far the most difficult to install. The material is not very stretchy, and I had to re-wrap a couple of times because I would get wrinkles in the tape. I have not been on any lengthy rides so I can't comment on comfort and grip although in the short term it feels comfy and grippy enough. In terms of looks, I have mixed feelings. The white backing shows through perforations and sides and I almost feel like it's a cheap look. I will update after I go on longer rides, but I kind of wish I went with a regular cork tape. I'll update this after a couple of months and hopefully a number of miles (If I can remember to).

This tape is best for me. The tape is not soft. But it is easy to maintain and keep clean.
Easy to install and is not rips easily at all as other review suggests. The other review suggests that the tape hard to remove. Not in my case. You have to know how to install the tape properly in the first place. I have installed and remove this tape multiple times without any issue.

Looks great,
The tape looks great and feels pretty sturdy. I replaced a more spongy tape that immediately started to change color from absorbing everything on my hands, this tape will definitely endure better. The only downside to this tape is that it isn't comfortable at all; this doesn't surprise me and I am still happy with it, but if you plan on purchasing this tape be warned that you will need to wear gloves for any long ride.

Nice tape for nice people,

This is very nice bar tape. It grips nicely even when your hands are sweaty, and doesn't pick up dirt in the same way that the cork stuff can. I have it on my nice road bike, and it works great. It doesn't absorb much, but oh well, that's what a carbon fork is for, right?
Here's the problem: I don't ride the nice road bike all the time - for daily commuting, errands, etc., there's a bike that's not as nice - an old steel all weather urban assault vehicle. On that bike, this tape is horrible. The lack of shock absorption is a big factor - cork is a bit better for that. The durability isn't there, either - after a heavy downpour or two, the tape started to disintegrate, and after a season of bad weather, the pretty apple green color had completely peeled off. In other words, it's a nice tape for nice people - I give it five stars for use on nice bikes that aren't exposed to daily weather extremes, but one star for use on old, crusty daily commuter bikes that have to endure a bit more abuse.

I was getting tired of looking down at my old, dirty, grease-stained handlebars on my road bike so decided it was time for a re-wrapping. After much research, I decided to settle on Fizik's tape just cause I like the quality of their products. This bar tape is really good looking and has small holes, not sure what the point of those holes are, maybe for weight or just pure aesthetics. I'm a beginning cyclist so it was the first time I wrapped my own bars. Be warned! I compared this tape's stretchiness to my old tape and microtex is barely stretchy which probably makes wrapping more difficult. I spent over an hour looking at YouTube videos, wrapping, unwrapping, and re-wrapping my bars...I know I could have just taken my bike to my LBS but I wanted to learn on my own. For my first time I think I did a good job and this tape feels very comfortable in your hand. Not much cushioning, but I have no problem with that. It comes with a pair Fizik bar plugs (which didn't fit in my bars), what may or may not be end tape with the Fizik logo on it, and two end pieces that you need to stick behind your shift levels before you actually start wrapping. I didn't know what the end pieces were for at first but the point of them is so there is no gap when you're wrapping around your shift levers. Luckily I watched a video that showed me how to wrap w/o them. Overall I'm really satisfied with this tape, but I'll have to experiment with other types before I settle with this one as my go-to tape. Four stars for lack of stretchiness. |
