Product Description

Our most popular Jacket. Designed decades ago for intrepid mountain adventurers, today this jacket is equally at home in the wilderness or in the city. Made of durable G-1000 and then carefully trimmed in leather at the cuffs and the hood, the Greenland Number 1 Special Edition is as classic as it gets. Reinforced shoulders and forearms, snap closure plaquette over the front zip and two chest pockets complete the function and the look. This jacket in its simplicity performs perfectly.

Let's talk sizing first off. I'm 6'2", 195 lbs., bought a Large, and the jacket fits exactly as it does in the model photo. Simply put, you need a G1000 Fjallraven. It's a year-round jacket that will last forever. For the summer it's a rain jacket that's more breathable than one of those marked up plastic bags made by North Face or Patagonia, so you won't (ironically) be soaked in sweat when you get to your destination. For spring, it's perfect as a single layer as it's the best windbreaker you'll ever find. For the fall it's a great outer layer to be used with a sweater or fleece. This thing is even useful in the winter as it neutralizes wind and snow. The only downside about winter usage is that you need to layer it with something else. I recommend something akin to a Columbia Men's Premier Packer Hybrid Jacket. It's rare that you can find a jacket you'll never throw into seasonal storage, but Fjallraven has produced such a rarity.

Incredible jacket. Leather trim is high quality and a nice addition. I used the greenland wax from Fjallraven to waterproof it for a rainy hike and it worked perfectly. The hood is big enough to keep you dry and comfortable. When the wax wears off, the jacket is breathable and light. Its not to be used alone as a cold weather jacket so layering is a must. It runs slightly larger than most Fjallraven items in medium so be mindful of that. I am 5'11" and 160 pounds and the arms are slightly wide for me. Again though, if layering it works perfectly.

One big issue for a lot of people... it has no hand pockets on the sides. I personally dont mind since i usually wear gloves but that could be a sticking point for a lot of people.

The material with which this jacket is made is of excellent quality, although the jacket itself is a bit thin, but wearing a pullover under it should be more than enough for cold weather. I really like Fjällräven because their products last forever.

Pros:
-I am 6'3 and this jacket fits perfectly in size large.
-The cuffs come about a half inch past my wrists at side.
-The hood has a nice shape and fits over a slim bike helmet, although has no toggles to tighten.
-The front has a smooth plastic zipper as well as heavy metal snap buttons.
-Contrasting fabric patches on backs of upper arms, shoulders, and backs to provide strength and protection
-Incredible eco g-1000 fabric is already imbedded with Greenland wax so it has some water resistance out of the box.

Cons:
-This jacket only has two pockets to speak of and they are located on the chest. They are roomy and will hold a checkbook and 5.5"+ phones.
-Not completely waterproof out of the box but will take about 20 minutes of moderate rain and wind before soaking through. With Greenland wax you can adjust the water tightness of the fabric, I ended up doing two coats on the contrast patches and applied conditioner to the leather and it is doing better in the rain yet is still breathable.
-Cost. This is a rather expensive rain jacket that must be taken care of if you want it to last. The previous jacket that I owned was from REI which was from their catalog (it was constructed from polyester and nylon and coated with a waterproof coating, the interior was webbed with heat activated seam tape) as with most other mid range synthetic fiber jackets, it lasted three and a half years before the interior seam seal tape began to peel back and another 6 months until most of it was completely gone. Granted you can repair it, it was going to be more work than it was worth.
