Kindergarten-Grade 3-- An easy-to-read account of Betsy Ross, a young war widow, and how she came to design the first flag of the United States. Written in an informal, accessible style, the narrative will make young students relate more closely to this important period in history. Spencer points out the fact that this story comes from the oral tradition, handed down from one generation to the next, and that even though there is no supporting factual data, there is no denying Betsy Ross's patriotism. Colorful, detailed pen-and-ink and watercolor paintings frame the text on each double-page spread. Unfortunately, they don't always match the text.
