Book Description

Flags stir powerful emotions, and few objects evoke such a sense of duty and love of one's homeland. In April 1861, the first flag of a new republic flew over North Carolina. The state had just seceded from the union, and its citizens would soon have to fight for their homes, their families, and their way of life. The Flags of Civil War North Carolina is the history of this short-lived republic (which later joined the Confederacy), told through the banners that flew over its government, cavalry, and navy. From the hand-painted flag of the Guilford Greys to the flag of the Buncombe Riflemen--made from the dresses of the ladies of Asheville--this collection is an exceptional tribute to the valiant men who bore these banners and to their ill-fated crusade for independence.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Praise for Glenn Dedmondt's previous books: "Dedmondt's book is timely testimony to the enduring power of flags to stir up and encapsulate powerful emotions." --Carologue "An excellent research tool for historians, professional or hobbyist." --Today's Librarian In April 1861, Pres. Abraham Lincoln demanded 75,000 troops from North Carolina to put down the "insurrection" at Fort Sumter. North Carolina governor John W. Ellis famously responded, "You can get no troops from North Carolina." Thus began the battle for the sovereignty of the people of North Carolina, as they seceded from the Union. Few artifacts from this period of North Carolina's history so poignantly represent this fierce crusade as do the beautiful and tattered banners of the short-lived republic. From the rousing battle flags to the majestic state banners, this definitive work showcases the determined artistry of a devoted people. Presented chronologically, the flag histories feature some 150 color illustrations, along with fascinating notations about each flag's evolution and the exploits of the men who fought under it. Photographs are included to illustrate particular patterns of wear, damage, or detailed artwork. This collection stands as a remarkable tribute to the valiant men who bore these banners. Featured here are the exquisitely hand-painted flag of the Guilford Greys; the Governor Ellis flag, presented to John W. Ellis shortly before his untimely death; the Grimes flag, made for Maj. Gen. Bryan Grimes, who was "last at Appomattox"; the Buncombe Riflemen flag, handsewn from the silk dresses of the young ladies in Asheville; and the Thomas Legion flag, flown by a company of young Cherokee soldiers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very straightforward reference, June 12, 2003
This review is from: Flags of Civil War North Carolina, The (Flags of the Civil War) (Paperback)
Compiled and written by educator and Civil War expert Glenn Dedmondt, The Flags Of Civil War North Carolina is a very straightforward reference presenting photographs, color illustrations, descriptions and history of the titular flags that flew over North Carolina when it seceded from the Union and fought on the side of the Confederacy during the years of the American civil war. Each page or two-page spread features the different flags of the various North Carolina regiments. A meticulously detailed resource offering very specific information for history and civil war buffs, The Flags Of Civil War North Carolina is a welcome contribution to the growing library of Civil War Studies and could well serve as a template for similar volumes for the other Confederate as well as Union states.

This review is from: Flags of Civil War North Carolina, The (Flags of the Civil War) (Paperback)
This is an outstanding book about the Civil War Flags of North Carolina. Major cudos to the author who has done very thorough and interesting history about the flags of the infantry, artillery, home guard, and HQ Flags of North Carolina from the beginning in 1861 to the end in 1865. Glenn Dedmondt makes every flags history interesting to read. The details of where the flag was made and what the flags went through are not boring by any means. This is an OUTSTANDING reference to any Civil War Historian or enthusiast. A fine addition to any Civil War library. Each of Glen Dedmondt's books about Confederate State Flags is worth obtaining. A truely must have!
