The Art and Flair of Mary Blair: An Appreciation was first published in 2003 and this is the updated edition. The only thing that's updated is actually the cover art. In essence, it's a reprint, a second edition.

This 128-page hardcover is published by Disney Editions and authored by the John Canemaker who has also written many other animation books.

Mary Blair was an American artist who used to work for Disney before she pursued her freelance career. She's an influential artist noted for her creativity and joyful colour palette. This book looks at her life and career and is sort of like a biography.

The book follows her life in chronological order starting from her training and even showed her watercolour works. Next would be the artworks she created for Disney and finally the work she produced while freelancing. Among the works, you'll probably find familiar works such as those from Cinderella, Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland. She's also known for the "It's a Small World" exhibition at the 1964 New York World's Fair.

Mary Blair's work has a child-like quality to them. Her design sensibilities to colour and design are wonderful and can be seen in the artworks showcased in the book. Many of her works could have been printed bigger.

There are reviewers from the earlier edition complaining about the inaccuracy of colour reproduction and amount of content which is lacking, both the text and the number of artworks included. I've not seen Mary Blair's original works so I can't really comment on the colour reproduction. About the lacking content. At times I do feel like there's more to Mary Blair's life than what's included in the book as she's a very prolific artist.

I purchased this book after reading through this one, and "Magic Color Flair" at my local library. I wasn't sure which to get at first but I was clear about what I wanted - I wanted Mary Blair artwork to sink my thoughts into. I love hearing her story and reading about her life, but I really wanted something that had some of my favorite pieces - bits from Alice and Wonderland, Cinderella, Peter Pan, Disney's Surprise Package, and other crowd favorite "Golden Books" and her best pieces from her freelancing years. This book by far was what had all of that. Magic Color Flair didn't have as much as I wanted it to.

In short: if you're looking for eye candy - this is the one you want of the two.

I knew that Mary Blair's illustrative work in books shaped my views on art in my childhood, but I was an adult for quite a while before I realized that it was her work that I admired so much in a few of Disney's movies.

This absolutely gorgeous book is an introduction to who Mary Blair was as a person -- not a biography. The writer glossed over aspects of her personal life to bring out a love-letter to Blair's artwork. Page after page is filled with full-color reproductions of her staggeringly beautiful work.

If you want a biography of Mary Blair, this is not the book for you. If you want to get lost in her lush artwork, this is definitely the book for you.

I wanted to buy the original one, but it is out of print and runs about $150! So happy this print came out! Love the photos. Great for any Disney fan and learning about a amazing female artist in the 1950s.

New edition - no new info. It is not a new book about Mary Blair, it is just a new cover on old material.

Mary Blair is my favorite element of Disney from the war and post war years. I first noticed her work in the feature film The Three Caballeros. I didn't realize until later on that it was her style that largely dominated the look of the film (and her style is best preserved in this film compared to others she worked on). I was glad that Canemaker's book on her got rereleased and picked it up. I was also suprised on how small it is. I was hoping for a biography in addition to some great illustrations. This book succeeds in the latter and being only 110 pages, it doesn't go into great depth, but the text is satisfying in telling us about her work and life. No surprise that she became more successful and influential than her husband (also an artist), Lee Blair. I was surprised that he outlived her.
While I wish it could have been a couple hundred pages longer and in a slightly larger format, I recommend this for Mary Blair fans (as well as the exhibition catalog that was released this year as a companion piece)

Really a great book. My family and I were lucky enough to see Mary's exhibit at the Disney Family Museum in 2014 and having this book will keep those inspirations with us. My daughter is now considering following Mary's footsteps.

This book is not up-dated at all. It is falsely advertised. The only difference between this and the first edition is the dust jacket.
