Kaliel and Krishani weren't meant to meet or fall in love but they did. Krishani’s dreams of death led him to a fate he’s terrified of--becoming the next Ferryman. His only refuge is Kaliel, the peculiar girl that swims with merfolk and talks to trees. Kaliel has a secret of her own--she’s the Amethyst Flame, one of nine apocalyptic weapons. The Valtanyana will destroy everything on Avristar to get to her. Kaliel has to choose: face them, hide or unleash the Flame.

Note: I received this book via Netgalley.

The first thing that caught my attention about this book was the cover; it was gorgeously breathtaking and drew me to the book right away. The plot itself seemed a little Romeo and Julietish to me. As elvens Kaliel and Krishani are supposed to "marry the land," not fall in love with one another. The challenges they seem to face are overwhelming but their love for each other is intense enough to last. For the most part the relationship seemed realistic in the rush of intensity and emotion they felt for one another.

Rhiannon did an amazing job of character and world building. The world is imaginative and creative although at some parts I got lost in what was going on and had to reread. Even though the story was extremely descriptive there were a few parts that stretched out making the pace of the story as a whole slow.

Overall, the book was extremely interesting once the reader immersed themselves into the world and the story was innovative enough to be entertaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars Flame of Surrender November 3, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
In The Flame of Surrender (Book #1 in the Ferryman and the Flame series) Rhiannon Paille creates a unique and beautiful world that will draw you in and make you remember what it was like to be young, innocent, and full of wonder.

I am fascinated by the Great Oak in this book - particularly that the Oak chooses your life's path (by giving you a "parable"), but you are the one who has to figure out what your parable means. And in addition, you have to choose which of three paths you take to the Oak (which I thought was very clever).

If you like a good star-crossed lovers story - with an "elven" twist - you will love this book. The end will leave you wanting more and wondering where the story will go. But don't worry, I've heard through the grapevine that there are more books to come in this series, so feel free to fall in love with it - you'll be getting another fix soon (wink wink!).

2.0 out of 5 stars Pretty but no plot February 26, 2013

Kaliel and Khrishani are Elven. They are born from the land and eventually they will marry the land (whatever that means) and go live in the Lands of Men (I still don't know what that is!) That is what they are both being trained for.
One night, when both of them are breaking the rules they accidently meet at a forbidden waterfall. Instantly they fall in love. I mean instantly. They are folding hands and being angsty about how they can't be together and making each other feel "warm" and this is all within the first 20 pages of the book. Then they pine after each other for over a year.

When both of them prove to be terrible apprentices (again, no idea what they are apprenticing for) they are shipped off to be mentored by the greatest whatever-they-are of the lands. Seriously, nothing is explained in this book. They meet, again by chance, at the same forbidden waterfall and a first Kaliel pushes him away but eventually she succumbs and they have secret affair.

I feel bad about this review (I almost decided not to review it) because I just did not like this book. Kaliel does nothing but mumble and mutter, she has no self-confidence, she's whiny, and she's lazy. She's clumsier than Bella Swan. Krishani is just as bad but then somehow he gets up and fights a war with ease.
Also, the whole plot is written in the summary, because it's not even explain that Kaliel is a Flame and Krishani is a Ferryman until over halfway through the book.

If there was one good thing about this book, it was the imagery. The lands of Avristar sound beautiful and lots of different mythologies are combined. However the author seemed to be more focused on making her world pretty, than writing and actual plot.

2.0 out of 5 stars I don't need to read Book 2. That's not a good thing.
If you wish to be kept in more suspense, don't read the back of the book.

I'm stunned, and unfortunately I cannot say it is in a most pleasant way. Read more
