2.0 out of 5 stars The title song sounds "diabolic"
I love Sally Olfield's music and her beautiful voice. "Flaming Star" is the most recent addition to my collection of her records. The music is lovely, but I found the title song's refrain sounding "diabolic." It is sung repeatedly over and over in some foreign language with the words: "Korienge ko DIABALO ku ramalla halla."

I couldn't find any English...

"You will be afraid of the LIGHT if your Heart is dark..."

Wow! This is my first Sally Oldfield CD and I am completely speechless! I bought 'Flaming Star' on a whim (the cover called out to me as I was perusing the new age section at my favorite record store) and it makes me wonder if (sometimes) an unknown force chooses what we buy, not us. And, as crazy as that may sound, these "whims" truly do puzzle me because they're almost ALWAYS albums that I come to treasure with the core of my very being! (Dagda, Govinda, State Of Grace and Oceania being prime examples for me...)

'Flaming Star' is a rare CD that radiates MAGIC of the purest kind and flows as a whole to become one in this "spiritual" journey about the creation of nature!

"Warm upon the wind comes the song of the melting snow
Far away a star plays a song of long ago.
I can feel it,
A cool wind from the mountains
Calling me from afar
Joining my heart to the heart of a star".

The ambient world grooves are key in making this album as beautiful and as addictive as it is but it's really the awe-inspiring words that make 'Flaming Star' so heavenly and worth buying!

Now, I don't mean to sound preachy or anything but the lyrics seem to serve as a reminder to stop what your doing and to take care of our natural surroundings (in other words, admire; don't destroy!), for the earth is our current home and we need to nurture, not diminish it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Flaming Star vs Water Bearer, May 26, 2002

Probably similar for the same method to enchant the listener. Two albums very different that define the carreer of an incredible artists. WB gives to us the idea of a fantastic world, populated by elves and mystical creatures, FS is the land of spiritual sensations, a path that guides us to heavenly melodies and incredible vocalizes such as that of invocation that seems to be a sort of prayer. try to listen this two albums in a mountain or in a forest.. try to see, while you are listening to Water Bearer or Flaming Star, the sun that shine in the sky, try to see some clouds that runs in the sky... if you are stressed by the work, by the city, by the family, take your car, buy these two albums, and go in an open country. Lying in the grass listen to this fantastic music and open your heart.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best album Sally's done in a long time!, November 1, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Flaming Star (Audio CD)
Sally Oldfield's early albums (like _Water Bearer_, _Celebration_, and _Playing in the Flame_) were masterpieces of artful prog-pop, but her later efforts (from the 80s and 90s) have been uneven and uninsipired. With _Flaming Star_, however, Sally seems to be back in form. Stylistically, this album is a bit of a shift for her, as it has a notable world music influence to it, while some moments have an ambient quality. Sally's voice sounds more lilting than it has in a long time, and the songwriting is stronger. That said, it should be noted that one of the tracks here, "Mirrors", is actually a remix/cover of one of her early classics, while another ("Bird of Paradise") incorporates musical themes that were originally in "Songs of the Quendi" from Sally's first album. (That's not the first time Sally's re-used the music from that song either-- she did it on her last album as well, on "Three Rings"). All in all, a fine album, and a nice recovery-- although I can't help but wonder whether it might not be an even better album if Sally would just let go of the 'crutch' of revisiting her older, classic material.

If you like Enigma, B-Tribe, Beautiful World, you will love this CD. Luscious grooves, world-beat rhythms, and beautiful vocals presented in a coherent album. I loved this CD from start to finish.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Album, October 13, 2001

Sally Oldfield is sister to Mike Oldfield (Tubular Bells). "Flaming Star" has beautiful, intricate and kaleidoscopic melding ambient textures and worldbeat rhythms mixed with the voice of an angel. The album sounds like a mix of Sarah Brightman meets Enya

Sally Oldfield mixes the most interesting sounds that could be Asian or Middle East! I only wished she could have spoken the words a little clearer...my husband listens to this quite often and the sounds are very interesting..

2.0 out of 5 stars The title song sounds "diabolic", February 8, 2009

I love Sally Olfield's music and her beautiful voice. "Flaming Star" is the most recent addition to my collection of her records. The music is lovely, but I found the title song's refrain sounding "diabolic." It is sung repeatedly over and over in some foreign language with the words: "Korienge ko DIABALO ku ramalla halla."

I couldn't find any English translation of these words. and because I don't keep or listen to any satanic music, I plan to ditch this particular record.

If anyone knows the meaning of the phrase quoted above, I would appreciate a comment.

Wow, I haven't heard a whole album grab me like this in a good while. Flaming star is so captivating - all of it. It has range and quality that stems from rhythmic beats to angelic songbirds. I set my cd alarm to the first 2 songs every morning, but I love each song.
