5.0 out of 5 stars Marvelous but Misunderstood
I bought this books whilst on vacation in London and absolutely love it! It's been a huge sucess in the UK and deserves the same in the US. One thing I would like to point out to potential buyers - it's a children's book. As an adult I love it - it's clever word play is fun for any age and the unique illustrations would make me laugh even unaccompanied by text - but it's...

3.0 out of 5 stars Wow, I'm stunned on 2 fronts...
I got this book without reading it first and my four year old was immediately obsessed. We went to a medical clinic on the way home, and he showed it to every random person walking down a hall. "Look at my new book!" and he's make an amazing creature pop up from the book. He would not stop looking at it and talking about it. I was delighted, since he's not into books...

I bought this books whilst on vacation in London and absolutely love it! It's been a huge sucess in the UK and deserves the same in the US. One thing I would like to point out to potential buyers - it's a children's book. As an adult I love it - it's clever word play is fun for any age and the unique illustrations would make me laugh even unaccompanied by text - but it's intended audience is kids. What I see starting here is what you'll see if you look at the reviews on Amazon UK - a complete split between 1 star and 5 star reviews. In virtually every case the people who didn't like the book are adults who purchased it expecting it to have been written for adult fans of The Office and this really isn't what this book is about at all. It's fun, it's silly, it's imaginative. All the children I've shown it to have immediately been hooked ("Draw Your Own Flanimal" is fast becoming the hot game to play amongst all my friend's kids). I look foward to meeting the Bletching, the Gernloid and the Weezy Tong Nambler in the future but in the meantime I must just go and see if I can prize that Underblenge off the fridge door...

5.0 out of 5 stars A bit hit for two kids, January 6, 2005

I ordered two copies of this book at amazon.co.uk as a Christmas gift for the kids of two friends, and it was a big hit, especially for the two girls, who are 9 and 10 years old. Their younger siblings (5 and 6) also liked it. Very silly, but the right kind of silliness for 3rd and 4th graders, with great pictures and even better made-up words that aptly describe these silly creatures. Parents will have fun reading this book with their children, I think.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great CHILDREN'S Book., February 25, 2005
This review is from: Flanimals (Hardcover)
The above review is completely wrong and useless. Whoever wrote it doesn't understand that the book was based towards kids. It is a great, creative book that dives into the realm of strange, fantasy like creatures. The pictures are very well drawn and the names and captions are entertaining and funny. Kids, as well as many teens and adults, will enjoy this book. Ricky Gervais did a great job on this book, and everybody should go and check it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars warning... kids will go nuts for this., June 25, 2005

This review is from: Flanimals (Hardcover)
My son will not shut up about flanimals. Everywhere we go he tells people about them. Every 5 minutes he tells me about some flanimal that eats some other or turns into some flanimal that... Oi!

Be prepared to have your child totally consumed by flanimals. Thanks god it isn't a collecting card game!! If only there was more flanimal books. Or perhaps a flanimal sound proof room!

Parents, buy this book! It all about weird made up creatures, kind of like a funny encyclopedia of monsters. Kids love it.

What I have done to stem the tide of flanimalism is to give my kid pen and paper and say "now YOU make your own flanimals!"

Buy it and Try it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars He should make a Flanimals II!, March 12, 2005
This review is from: Flanimals (Hardcover)
"He should make a Flanimals II." is the quote from my six year old. Amazingly, we have read this book 6 times in the first twelve hours of owning it. During this time I have had 9, 10, 11, and 13 year olds enjoying it just as much. I even overheard the older "cool" ones discussing the creatures within. We are in for many more days of Ricky Gervais' clever world -- luckily I am loving every minute of it. Just an aside, younger children may need some coaching with reading this independenly as there are many made up names that need to be sounded out phonetically and there is definitely a British tone. Most appropriate for second grade readers and up. I, actually, would probably have bought this book for myself even without children -- the little girl inside loves it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars FUNNY, PSEUDO-SCIENCE BOOK, February 28, 2005
This review is from: Flanimals (Hardcover)
Flanimals IS a children's book...plain and simple. And as such, it works quite humorously as sort of a quasi-science book...a field guide to the species of Flanimals, filled with marvelous illustrations of each of the 26 flanimals and witty text detailing a brief summary of their behavior, their specialized body features, and how this all effects their psychology.

The book also details how the various Flanimals interact or react to other Flanimal species. You'll see how a as a Grundit stamps out a Coddleflop! You'll observe a baby Munty Fumple as it naps...so cute! In chapter three you will put your knowledge to the test and try to identify the Flanimal species by their footprints or by their behavior patterns.

Through it all Rob Steens wildly cartoonish and garish illustrations bring the Flanimals to life before your eyes. Think of Flanimals as Dr. Seuss for the 21st century with it's bizarre text and equally bizarre illustrations. Kids will love the crazy names such as Clunge Ambler that looks like someone's big toe or the Offledermis that: "Born completely inside out", this offensive little beast "lives inside itself to avoid its own smell."

Truly hilarious and wild stuff. A pity some people just didn't get it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVE IT, but..., April 29, 2006
By
This review is from: Flanimals (Hardcover)
First off, let me start by saying that I love this book. It's cute, funny, gross, and just an all around good time.

I'm not going to sit here and complain like some others have that this is for kids and feel duped. No, because I think it is great for adults.

However, many people on here have stated that this book is overwelmingly a kids book. I disagree, and here is why.

There is a lot of adult undertones scattered throughout this book, some more obvious than others. Many of which kids wouldn't get. For instance, the Plumboid Dopplers "scientific" name is Scrotus Boggelum. Guess what he looks like; a scrotum. I think this just goes to show that the author did have adults in mind, at least a little, when making this book.

I do realize that kids will likely not catch onto that. But other things might not be that good for kids to read. Like ripping creatures heads off, and popping the eyes out of one called a Puddloflaj.

If you get this book with your kids in mind I would suggest reading it to them and skipping over all the things that are a bit questionable.

That all being said, I would like to say once again that I LOVE this book. Unlike the other people who complain about it. If you think your child can handle it, then by all means go for it, I am not one for censorship. I beleive that many kids are sheltered a bit too much, but this may not be for every kid.

I can't wait to get a copy of Flanimals II!

5.0 out of 5 stars My kids couldn't get enough, November 2, 2006
This review is from: Flanimals (Hardcover)
I gave this to my son for Halloween - he's 8. He and my 6 year old daughter are now obsessed with drawing and inventing new flanimals. I thought they'd think it was cute but never imagined they'd become absolutely hysterical with glee.

My son absolutely loves this book. We read it over and over. He loves to make up creatures himself so this book just fits him perfectly. The words are a little hard to pronounce but that is part of the fun. If I have my son begging for a book, I'm happy.
