Wonderful volume on the FLANKER family of combat aircraft, May 13, 2006
This review is from: Flankers: The New Generation - Red Star Vol. 2 (Paperback)
In the world of aviation books, Midland Publishing can be considered a leading authority on a diverse range of civil and military aircraft. The Red Star book series, by noted aviation expert Yefim Gordon, deals entirely with Russian and Soviet aircraft. Red Star's Volume 2, entitled Flankers the New Generation, offers valuable insight into new production plans and upgrade programs for the potent and powerful Su-27 FLANKER aircraft family. This volume is an excellent addition to your collection.
Gordon breaks down the book into 4 main sections, an introductory section and a summary that nicely wraps up the reporting. The main sections cover the the development of the Su-27SM series of upgrades, the Su-27UB 2-seater trainer development and its subsequent modification into the Su-30MK 2-seat strike aircraft that has been exported to China, India, and Indonesia( with Malaysia on order), the Su-27IB FULLBACK variant development currently in low rate production with the Russian Air Force, and a section of Naval aviation use of FLANKER on the Kuznetzov. The bulk of Gordon's research has been received from the from Sukhoi and his own personal archive of information, and is as consistently good as his other Midland volumes. As expected with Gordon, each aircraft and its variants are properly illustrated with a wealth of color and black and white photographs perfect for enthusiasts and modelers.
Currently the Russian Air Force suffers from a funding gap that hinders the ability to procure new production FLANKER aircraft as well as offer sufficient funding for all the upgrade programs mentioned above. Coupled with the desire to begin design on the 5th Generation PAK-FA fighter(also designed by Sukhoi), resources will be extremely limited in the years to come. Gordon, utilizing his sources with the manufacturers and Russian government and military officials offers details as to which programs have the best chance to fully develop and which may fall by the wayside. Published in 2002, this book has become a bit dated so combining this with the new Red Star release by Gordon, Russian Military Aircraft in the 21st Century, would provide an updated perspective. Recommended.

Short review, July 26, 2002
This review is from: Flankers: The New Generation - Red Star Vol. 2 (Paperback)
This excellent book focus on explaining the flanker variants, particularly Su-30 and later ones. It's one of the most up-to-date books on Su-27, with many interesting pictures (such as Flanker's cockpit display when it dropped bombs, production line pictures, different variant prototypes in flight... etc). It's a must have for readers interested in Russian military aviation.
