Book Description

Magic (New Riders) August 7, 2002
Half of Flash is AUDIO, not just visual: Don't let bad sound ruin your great looking Flash site. Flash Audio Magic is organized into six projects-based sections, each of which contains several stepped-through tutorials for mastering a critical component of creating and integrating audio with Flash. These six sections are followed by four appendices completely covering the myriad resources on the book's CD and how to use them, keyboard shortcuts, bibliography (books and web sites), and more. The CD-ROM includes trail version of Flash, ACID Pro 3.0, copy of ACID Xpress, Vegas Audio 2.0, SoundForge XP, 4.5, library of ACID loops, FLA, SWF and WAV examples, list of online resources. Flash Audio Magic is not tied to a specific rev of Flash.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Audio integration is a big question mark (or an unfortunate afterthought) for many Flash developers and designers (yes, there is such a thing as audio *design*). Yet it represents a complete other dimension for expressing your point with Flash; this goes for almost any application of Flash, no matter how bluntly commercial or esoterically artistic. And... there are skills you can sharpen to make yourself better at audio integration. There may well be skills you never knew you needed. This book may be worth a look:

1. Q: WHAT'S IN IT? A: Recipe-like tutorials covering Audio Design; Recording Techniques; Editing; Enhancing Your UI w/ Audio; Controlling Audio Playback; Creating Looping Backgrounds; Creating Backgrounds for Synchronization; Using Background Sound for Your Flash Projects; Controlling Sounds with ActionScript; Streaming MP3 Audio in Flash; Building a MultiSound Mixer; Designing Game Architectures; Finding Source Material for Game Audio; Video Audio Planning & Creation; and Flash-Tracked QuickTime.

2. Q: WHAT ABOUT AUDIO SOFTWARE? A: It was our experience in developing this book that so many people are jumping on the audio development bandwagon--and in the process, adopting so many different programs available--that most of you will already have your own software. The authors chose to use Sonic Foundry's Sound Forge (audio editing), ACID PRO (music creation), and Vegas Video (video editing) software for the demos and screenshots in the book, but most programs have the same basic features and can be used to get the same results shown in the book. For PC users who don't yet have any of this software, the Sonic Foundry demos included on the CD have all the features necessary to learn the principles shown in the book. For Mac users, time limitations prevented us from getting licenses cleared for Mac-based demos. Not to worry: You can download Mac-based audio software (including the free demos that do what the book discusses) from sites like hitsquad.com and Mac Digital Audio.

3. Q. WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE? A: Four very talented, diverse professionals, coming from the creative side as well as the development side; coming from commercial interests and coming from the experimental. Check out their bios elsewhere on this page; then check out their web sites. You can do this. Sound cool?

Thanks, and let me know what other books you need. We'll see what we can do. Steve Weiss, executive editor, New Riders. steve.weiss@newriders.com.

5.0 out of 5 stars Flash designers need not ignore this book!, March 21, 2003
By
Michael A. Stewart (Atlanta, GA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Flash MX Audio Magic (Paperback)
I love Flash, and I am an audio designer for over 20 years. It has baffled me how so many great Flash designers wow me visually and totally ingore the power of streaming audio in Flash. Brad Kozak has organized this information and hit the nail on the head of what it takes to make quality audio, covers the tools and techniques to do it right are allin this book. I bought it as a reference, but I suggest it be required reading for anyone designing Flash presentations for the web and CDroms. Silent movies didn't last very long in Hollywood and there is no reason Flash movies should remain silent or contain mindless music loops when audio that supports the visuals is so easy to deliver in Flash.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for Multimedia!, November 4, 2002
This review is from: Flash MX Audio Magic (Paperback)
This is a great book, especially the style used in writing the actual code. Great instruction on using audio editing programs, and how they relate to the Flash projects. Excellent instruction for linking audio button to animated button. Amazing demonstration of "Multiple Logic" for button behavior. Great video game instruction. I like that there is a website for it, and I really appreciate that the entire project is included on CD-Rom to study. I am inspired by the chapter illustrating how to define the project with the client. It really helps when an author discusses how to actually run a web-based business.

4.0 out of 5 stars Finally a Book Dealing with Audio in Flash, October 31, 2003
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Flash MX Audio Magic (Paperback)
As with any book of this type, you buy it and hope that there's something you can glean from it that is useful.

This book, while far from a complete reference, has already provided me with some good tips on a current project. Flash and audio is partly the subject along with the programs that create or enhance audio such as Acid Pro and SoundForge, and how you use the results in Flash.

If you don't have any advanced audio applications, don't buy this book; you'll likely be disappointed because you'll have to rely on whatever demo versions of this software are available. But, if you are a multimedia professional and have one or more of these integral audio tools, you'll find some good information along with what you already knew -- and it's information that will prove valuable not only for Flash, but also Director and DV if you do that too.

I'm still waiting for the definitive "audio in multimedia" reference, but this will give me some stuff to work on and think about until I find it.
