From School Library Journal
Grade 6-8?Danna Press, 15, is bored with her life and wishes the excitement of the fires around L.A. would reach Pinch Canyon, the prestigious, isolated development where she lives with her brother and her parents. While the adults are at work, the brushfires do reach the canyon. At first, the neighborhood children want to stay and protect their homes, but they soon realize the fires are life threatening. Told in diary-style entries giving exact times and locations, all the action takes place between 3:15 and 4:55 P.M., creating a tightly knit story. Although the many characters may prove a bit confusing at first, Cooney eventually succeeds in weaving their lives together into a life-and-death rescue. Realistic descriptions of how fires jump and spread, techniques used to fight them, and the thrill seekers and looters who prevent firefighters from doing their job are all skillfully integrated. Similar to Cooney's Flight #116 Is Down (Scholastic, 1992), this exciting natural-disaster tale will surely be popular.?Bonnie L. Raasch, C.B. Vernon Middle School, Marion, IA

Gr. 7^-10. Danna's wish for a more exciting life comes true as a fire sweeps through her luxurious L.A. neighborhood. Among other residents struggling to escape are Elony, a recent immigrant who provides the scathing impressions of an outsider; adored son Beau Severyn and his belittled younger sister; and Danna's brother, Hall, who is forced to choose between life and death for one of the group. In quickly sketched passages, Cooney introduces a number of other characters, including several parents, creating an impression of the riches linked to parental love and the damage inflicted by parental neglect. Add to that thorough research, a humorously ironic tone, and page-turning action, and you have a high-quality offering that will appeal to reluctant readers as well as to teens who relish adventure stories.
