Jazz saxophonist Anton Schwartz has been drawing listeners in with the power, spirit and subtle complexity of his music since he bounded onto the San Francisco jazz scene in 1995. At 27, Anton was answering the call of his long-standing passion for jazz, stepping away from the high-level research in Artificial Intelligence he'd carried out at Harvard and Stanford. Quite a career change. ... Read more in Amazon's Anton Schwartz Store

Editorial Reviews

"★★★★... Just about all of these songs have the kind of shapely themes you can imagine other players wanting to cover." --DownBeat Magazine (March, 2014)

Blazingly hot stuff throughout, Schwartz and company serve up some of the best ensemble playing around and make it sound way too easy. A winner throughout." --Midwest Record (December 2, 2013)

"Impressive and virtually impossible to resist." --The Buffalo News (December 20, 2013)

" ★★★★★... Anton Schwartz is back and better than ever!" --Critical Jazz (January 2, 2014)

…the music on his disc here is both impressive and virtually impossible to resist. --The Buffalo News (December 20, 2013)

5.0 out of 5 stars Bravissimo! Brilliant Hard Bop Ensemble February 27, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Anton Schwartz is a West Coast (San Francisco and Seattle) hard-bop character who plays a solid tenor saxophone. With Flash Mob, his 2014 opus, Schwartz suddenly finds himself featured in newspapers, interviewed on jazz radio, and performing at jazz festivals. He deserved it before but everything crystallized here with Taylor Eigsti on piano, Lorca Hart on drums, John Shifflett at the bass, and playing trumpet and flugelhorn, Dominick Farniacci. This is a Bay Area project throughout, as the recordings were made at Fantasy Studios and produced by the late Bud Spangler. The album fills 67 minutes with some excellent jazz, clever arrangements, and fine group interplay.

It opens with the title track; it is a burst of energy, Eigsti's improvisations leading the way for Schwartz to develop. Finally, Farinacci brightens the picture with brass. Swamp Thang next takes us South with Shifflet's bass introduction and Hart's funky drum work; the repeating phrasing of horns conjures a low mist of fun and mystery. The third track Cumulonimbus (a cloud type) is indeed nebulous and abstract. This is not a gentle floating form but one thick and billowing and rising high in accelerating harmony. I had to scratch my head with Pangur Ban and soon learned that it is an ancient Irish monk's poem about his cat. The track begins with bagpipe-like chords and develops playful bouncing catlike movements; it closes again with a bagpipe drone. Continuing in the animal kingdom, Alleybird has a soulful urban flavor of a small jazz club hidden in the shadow of tall buildings, the blues pouring out into the street. Spurious Causes, a witty comment, has nothing false about it: it is forceful and bright and unrelenting. Kenny Dorham's La Mesha follows as a sweet exhale, establishing the softer side of the ensemble.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, more amazing jazz from Anton and friends January 28, 2014
Format:Audio CD
Great great music from this bunch. I have listened to Anton Schwartz get better and better over the years. Throw in Dominick Farinacci on trumpet--a real treat to listen to, add Taylor Eigsti on piano (NPR "piano jazz, rising star") who is simply amazing,
plus John Shifflett on bass and Lorca Hart on drums (both also good) and how could this CD be anything but fantastic? Jazz definitely lives in this "Flash Mob." You might also consider Mr. Schwartz's past CD, "Radiant Blue," which also demonstrates how incredible his music (and groups) can be.
