4.0 out of 5 stars Racing to the Finish Line... September 16, 2012
By JME2

In the summer 2008, I read "Final Crisis: Rogues' Revenge". I was interested since I'd heard Flash fans rave for years about the Geoff Johns/Scott Kolins stories from the early 2000's. While I grew up with Wally West as the Flash, I had never been the biggest of fans, nor had I read Johns' stories. I had preferred to stick with his work on Green Lantern and Hawkman. But I decided to give it a shot. Upon reading the mini-series, I immediately grasped why these fans were praising this depiction of the Rogues and the mythology. I went back and re-read the collected editions and became a true fan of the Scarlet Speedster.

When DC announced last year that they were collecting the entire run in omnibus editions, I was instantly sold. The first two omnibuses have been analyzed and reviewed, so I'm going to just into the third and (barring a reprint of his Barry Allen stories) final collection. Volume Three collects The Flash #201-225, The Flash #1/2 (which serves as the "Rogue War" prologue), and Wonder Woman #214 (the second half of the Flash/Wonder Woman "Truth or Dare" crossover). Alternately, it's the material collected in the Flash trade paperbacks "Ignition", "The Secret of Barry Allen", "Rogue War", and "Wonder Woman: Land of the Dead".

The narrative opens several months after the end of the second omnibus (or alternately, the "Blitz" trade paperback). Zoom is imprisoned, but Wally West and Linda Park are struggling to rebuild their lives in the wake of the murder of their unborn children. Like their marriage, Keystone City is also falling apart as the Flash hasn't been seen in months. To his shock, Wally discovers he IS the Flash -- but has no memory of his costumed exploits. He'll have to solve the mystery of his missing memories and get back into the saddle, because trouble's brewing with the Rogues and war is coming to the Twin Cities...

Since reading the trades back in 2008, I've always considered the post-"Blitz" era to be weaker half of Johns' first run. To be fair, he set up and explored some interesting ideas now that Wally's secret identity was, well, secret again. Giving Wally a day job as a mechanic for the KCPD was a great example. He even continued the Rogue Profiles, which changed the way I thought about the second Mirror Master and Heatwave. The main weakness is that the narrative unfortunately gets bogged down by tie-in's to Brad Meltzer's 2004 mini-series "Identity Crisis" (and to some extent, the lead-up to 2005's "Infinite Crisis"). That having been said, there are good aspects of tying into Meltzer's murder mystery.

The drama of Meltzer's yarn hinged on new revelations about the Justice League during the Satellite-era, revelations that had Barry Allen right at the center of it all. While Wally's viewpoint was a big part of the mini-series, Johns gets to expand on it here. He forces Wally to reconcile his memories of the superhero Barry Allen with the new revelations of the man Barry Allen. It's especially interesting to see the expansion of Wally' reaction to his uncle's past acts given the changes to his belief system since the horrific events of "Blitz". Johns also used the mystery to bring several other ongoing subplots to a head for his climax, "Rogue War". 7 years later, it still remains a grand finale for his first run. I also still think it could have easily served as the final Flash story.

Now, on to the artwork. Alberto Dose's pencils ("Ignition") open the set. His artwork is dark, moody, and stylized -- a contrast to Kolins, but a perfect choice for the post-"Blitz" atmosphere and tone. Howard Porter ("JLA") then took over as the regular artist following "Ignition". He had big shoes to fill given how loved Kolins' tenure was. Porter does a good job picking up where his predecessor left off. It's not quite the same magic, but it's still alright. If anything, his execution of large-scale action sequences had improved in the years since "JLA". For example, the art for "Rogue War" still holds up well 7 years later. The other artists (Steven Cummings, Dave Johnson, etc.) also did a good good job with their respective fill-in's or Rogue Profiles.

Finally, onto the extras. There isn't much besides Michael Turner's sketches and alternate covers. The binding is also the same as the previous volumes. I have concerns about so many issues being collected like this. But, I knew that going in and considered it a necessary trade-off for having my favorite Flash stories collected.

Just a word of warning: several pages in this book has been printed out of its proper order.

People are waiting for DC to acknowledge this flaw and maybe fix it with some recall and reprint program, but don't hold your breath.
