Book Description

February 1, 2003
Maggie Walsh, a freelance photo-journalist with a penchant for dangerous situations, receives a tip that the Dalai Lama is dead. In McLeod Ganj, home of the Tibetan community in exile, she confirms the truth of the tip, but before she can get out with her photographs, she is apprehended. While detained, she gets to know a young monk, and when he announces he is going into Tibet to follow the oracle to find the Dalai Lama's reincarnation, she persuades him to take her with him. It is the beginning of an extraordinary physical and spiritual adventure as they first locate the newly born child, and then attempt to return to McLeod Ganj without alerting the Chinese.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

After the triumph of The Rainaldi Quartet (2006), British author Adam delivers a routine thriller focusing on the continuing Chinese oppression of Tibet. Journalist Maggie Walsh, having barely survived being caught in the middle of a firefight in Colombia, happens on the story of a lifetime when she manages to infiltrate the Himalayan inner sanctum of the Dalai Lama and learns, to her astonishment, that the beloved spiritual leader has died. Maggie tags along as the search begins for the baby in whom he has been reincarnated. When word of the quest reaches the political leadership in Beijing, the dreaded Public Security Bureau frantically launches a massive military operation to thwart it. Numerous hairbreadth escapes and the predictable growing attraction between Maggie and one of the monks seeking the new Dalai Lama will have some readers eagerly turning pages, but others will find this outing strictly by the numbers. Review

'Paul Adam takes you to the high Himalayas of Tibet where few novelists or readers have gone before. A truly entertaining and intelligent adventure tale told by a master storyteller. FLASH POINT is wonderfully plotted, fast-paced and refreshingly original.' Nelson DeMille **For SHADOW CHASERS: 'Tough, worldly Euro-thriller . Highly effective, undoubtedly authentic.' Philip Oakes ** for GENESIS II 'Very exciting, very scary.' - Lit. Review

This intriguing novel offers insight into Tibet and its Chinese occupation as well Buddhism. It is original and exciting as Maggie, a British camera woman, accompanies three monks on their quest for the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama. Very well done and definitely makes me want to read Paul Adams' other works.

Readers should be aware that this is the same novel as "Oracle Lake." This is the British edition. See my review of "Oracle Lake."
