Book Description

April 1989 A Kelpie Paperback
Tom Stokes is an orphan. His sister is going to America to get married, but where can he go? They remember an uncle and aunt they scarcely know who live in the borders of Scotland. After the city bustle of London, Tom finds his uncle's farm barren and lonely. How can he adjust to such a life? Help comes in the form of a sheepdog pup, and his loneliness is forgotten when Tom realizes it is his, to love and to train (maybe to be a champion). Life on the hill-farm, with his new friend Elspeth, and Flash, becomes adventurous and challenging. Then his sister writes that Tom can come and live with her in America, and he is faced with the most difficult decision of his life ...

Editorial Reviews

Review

'The technicalities of sheepdog training and the suspense of the trials are conveyed in an accessible and entertaining manner, and Tom and Flash's adventures in the fog and the rescuing of the sheep in the winter storm create dramatic tension. The characters of his uncle and aunt are presented with warmth and humour and the rural setting is convincingly portrayed.' -- Treasure Islands: A guide to Scottish fiction for young readers aged 10-14, Summer 2003 'Another home-grown story that will delight youngsters.' -- Stewart Peterson, Greenock Telegraph 'First published in 1965, an attractive new edition of this lively children's story will appeal to younger readers today.' -- Scots Magazine, Sept 2007 --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars great read for kids and adults, October 13, 2008
I ordered this book for my son, who is 8 and a good reader, because he loves collies and stories about collies. We also have a collie he wants to teach to herd. He devoured this book--couldn't put it down, and then he wanted to read it to me, which he did. It is a great story of a lonely orphan boy who finds his place in a new home (and country) as he raises and trains a sheepdog. It has suspense and is very heart-warming. My son loves it so much, he has begun reading it a third time, second time aloud, so the whole family can enjoy it (daddy was out of town the first 2 readings). Dog lovers will enjoy it. More than a simple chapter book.
