Book Description

April 24, 2001

Flash Site Workshop is aimed at designers and developers who want to build a fully functional Web site with dynamic and e-commerce capabilities from pre-fabricated components that can be quickly and easily customized. For this book, the Workshop Team has assembled a vast array of Flash features (more than any one Web site is likely to ever use). In the course of the book, they dissect each feature explaining the components used and showing how to customize it for your specific purpose.

Each chapter will have the same basic structure, beginning with introducing the movie covered in the chapter and how it works, to customizing each component, to reassembling the customized components into a working Flash feature. Additionally, the book will offer suggestions and tips on further customization and list other resources the reader might want to consult.

Flash Site Workshop allows the reader to work either feature-by-feature to assemble a site completely in Flash or to choose only those features that the reader wants to use in their particular site.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good But Not for Everyone Due to Software Requirements, May 22, 2001
This review is from: Flash Site Workshop (Paperback)
This is a good book with useful stuff. It covers topics like creating an online store and cart, survey visitors, setting up a services catalog, building a threaded message board, etc.

The software requirements to use the examples on the CD-ROM are not printed on the back cover of the book. If you do not look at the page next to the CD-ROM jacket, you will not realize what you need.

You need to have your computer installed with the following: Operating System: Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000, Software: Active Server Pages 2.0 or higher (included with IIS), Apple QuickTime Player (included with IIS), Microsoft CDONTS (included with the Option Pack), Microsoft Data Access Components 2.5 or higher, Microsoft Internet Information Server 4.0 or higher, Microsoft XML Parser 3.0 or higher (included with the Data Access Components), MySQL 3.23 or higher (included on this CD-ROM), Real Networks Real Video Player.

So, if you do not have NT4 or Windows 2000 on your computer, are you ready to make the change?? Think before you buy this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this book!, March 16, 2004

This review is from: Flash Site Workshop (Paperback)
If you learn from deconstructing pre-built flash applications, you'll love this book. This book is full of useful flash applications such as an online store, a services catalog, a user survey, a threaded message board, and smaller more common examples, such as flash player sniffers, and preloaders. It shows you how to add quicktime movies to an application, work with various server-sided languages such as asp with an access database, or php with a mysql database and XML. I can't say enough good things about this book. It's one of my very favorate flash books. The book's written for Flash 5, but the examples are still better than newer published books ... it's not easy to find good server-sided Flash books.
