1.0 out of 5 stars this book is horrible
Oh god this book is really horrible
after reading the whole book you will find your self able to make simple and silly motion and nothing more
the worst thing in this book is that you should watch the author speaking to you in a very silly way

5.0 out of 5 stars Video makes learning a lot easier, January 26, 2001

I generally find it slow and tedious to read computer books. I get bogged down in trying to follow all the instructions and make them match up with the screen pictures. This book comes with a CD that plays video on your computer. Doug Sahlin, the author, tells you how to do things in Flash, and demonstrates them with moving screen shots. It's like watching over the shoulder of an expert. I am picking Flash up much faster than I ever would have and I hope that more computer books come with great videos like this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Flash Book I have seen, July 13, 2001

As a Flash fanatic, I own 5 "Bible" to "Reference" Flash books: most of them thick and heavy. I wanted to learn and master Flash as quickly as possible without going to or pay its classes hundreds to thousands of $. So, I didn't (don't) have time nor patience reading through some loquacious-professor-speaking nor I'll-entertain-you w/ nonsensical stuffs.

This is my favorite tutorial/quick reference book in that the contents are clear and concise to the point with pertinent illustrations. The CD-rom is as equally excellent. It is a stream video lessons that are practical and applicable to your sites. I wish I had owned this book as my first Flash book. It would have saved me so much time and money. I look forward to reading more of his books.

5.0 out of 5 stars fun, clear, concise, with some goofy comedy relief!, April 23, 2001
By

This review is from: Flash(tm) 5 Virtual Classroom (Paperback)
I just completed the virtual classroom CD accompanying Doug Sahlin's Flash 5 book. I must say that it was an enjoyable way to spend a few hours. I teach graphics glasses and am always interested in seeing other teaching methodologies for classroom, distance, and self-paced learning environments.

This book could be used in any of those arenas. The author displays a thorough knowledge of the subject in a clear and concise fashion both in the video and the book chapters. The book is laid out in a clean and organized style and although I would recommend this book for beginner/beginners, I added a few new tips to my collection. I enjoyed the video presentations, although I had some sputtering of sound and sound/lip sync problems with the real player.

Tonight I viewed the video again from another computer wondering if the voice over might accomplish the same thing without the video of the instructor as it's really the content in the main window that is important and well presented. However, you can see that the author is a clown and having a good time creating this project for us, and the element of a real teacher can ad that touch of humanity missing in our on-line virtual existance! I value the ability to have my program of flash running simultaneously with the video so I could pause the video and do the lessons.

I have used flash to produce a few company demos and consinder myself an intermediate user. I get stuck on the actionscripting and this book touches on actionscripting enough so one could advance to a book like Foundation Actionscripting with a basic understanding of this robust flash feature.

I recommend this book to flash beginners and anyone who hasn't launched their flash program in a while and wants a good clean organized review.

This book was excellent for me. I am just starting out to learn Flash and needed plenty of help. The CD-ROM VIDEOS that go with the book are a plus with much valuable information to be easily learned. I will continue to have much use for this book and CD as I progress with Flash. I highly recommend this book/CD to all interested in an informative and valuable tool for working with Flash.

I thought the book was very informative especially since I've never used Flash 5 and the video is a plus. Felt like I had my own personal instructor!

4.0 out of 5 stars A great way to learn, March 15, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Flash(tm) 5 Virtual Classroom (Paperback)
As someone who had no experience using Flash 5, I found this book/CD bundle extremely useful. Normally I get bogged down trying to follow instructions and match them with printed screen shots, however this book eliminates that particular problem. I found the video extremely useful in getting to know my way around the user interface. I feel this way of learning help me flatten what can sometimes be a steep learning curve. Overall a very good learning experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book for Beginners or More Advanced Users, March 28, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Flash(tm) 5 Virtual Classroom (Paperback)
I think Sahlin has done a great job with this book. It is basic and easy to understand for beginners while not being too simplistic for more experienced users. I thought the book was very well written and the videos were very helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW, March 16, 2001
This review is from: Flash(tm) 5 Virtual Classroom (Paperback)
This book was so cool. It was like taking a real class only better because I could stop it and replay it anytime I wanted. I've never seen anything like this where you get the book and an instructor at the same time. It's presented in a really interesting way. Not boring. And I've been trying to learn Flash with several books. So far this one has taught me the most.

I highly recommend this book/CD. I hope this company puts out more like this. What a grat way to learn.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't get better than this., July 12, 2001

This review is from: Flash(tm) 5 Virtual Classroom (Paperback)
This is my very first book review. And, I am compelled to say that out of 5 Flash books I own, all of which are thick & heavy "bibles" to "reference" books, this tops them all! I wish I had obtained this as my first Flash book. That would have saved me SO much time and money to quickly grasp a truly useful Flashabilities.

The book's content is no-nonsense, to-the-point, and w/ the pertinent graphics tutorials and references. And, the interactive CD-rom: Wow!!! Just sit back and watch the pro make it so easy for you learn to apply to your own pages.

This has been my #1 tutorial/reference book. And, I can't wait to get my hands on the author's next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars This classroom delivers the goods, March 27, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Flash(tm) 5 Virtual Classroom (Paperback)
This book/cd pairing sets a high standard for computer instruction. For most people, it is dry and difficult to master a new program with only the manual in hand. This package eliminates that problem with a CD containing excellent video instruction to accompany the informative text in the book. Having the author on video as your instructor, it truly does constitute a virtual classroom. I found both the book and the videos to be useful and informative. Together, they made the learning process much easier.
