Another Shade of Folk,
By
This review is from: Flashlight Seasons (Audio CD)
Gravenhurst, for all intended purposes, is Nick Talbot, a singer-songwriter from the UK. This album is, by and large, acoustic, and even when it is not ?an occasional gentle electric guitar, for instance? it remains, at heart, another shade of Folk.
To call him another poetic son of Nick Drake, given the excessive use of such comparison of late, seems too vague and hardly sufficient to get a sense of Talbot. If comparisons can help, I'd rather associate him with some of his young contemporaries, like Teitur or Jim Moray. If not because of the similarity of their melodies, then for the common unpretentious beauty of their compositions. Hush, tender songs that will evoke whatever you may love, or you remember with fondness, or takes you back to some gentle moment you might still cherish. As he writes "I caress where my lover once lay by / my side before I turned inwards and / forced her to fly." Probably, every song will cast its particular spell on you. In my case, "fog around the figurehead," "bluebeard," "the diver," "damage II," "the ice tree" or "hopechappel hill" already have for me. You are in for a gentle treat.

a singer songwriter on warprecords? odd but a somehow great choice!nick talbot has made a beautiful record. he's flirting with nick drake in a subtle way. this is an album that will continue to grow on you. it's like hooking up with a good friend you haven't seen in a long time.

Understated and mellow, soft and beautiful, this album is perfect for cloudy Sunday afternoons in the fall.
