Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In this stygian chiller, Shamus Award-winning Hightower (Satan's Lambs) introduces hardworking Cincinnati homicide cop Sonora Blair, a single mom of two who is stalked by a female serial killer obsessed with broken dolls and the act of cremating young male victims alive. When Sonora interrogates the dying Mark Daniels, a college student found handcuffed and set afire in his older brother Keaton's car, she is horrified to learn that the perpetrator was a young blonde. It quickly becomes evident that Mark's ritualistic murder was a manifestation of the killer's sexual fixation on Keaton. After the news media reveals Sonora as the officer in charge of the case, the killer?nicknamed "Flash"?phones the cop; soon a strange love/hate relationship develops between the two. Evidence of Flash's identity leads Sonora down a trail of similar crimes beginning in neighboring rural Kentucky, crossing into West Virginia, then southward to Atlanta. When the cop falls into bed with Keaton, Flash becomes insanely jealous and starts to menace Sonora's kids, then throws caution to the winds to wreak her revenge. Hightower's prose is functional only, but her pacing is brisk, her characters well drawn and credibly flawed and her plotting diabolically intriguing from start to finish. $20,000 ad/promo; Rights: William Morris Agency.

From Library Journal

Sonora Blair, a Cincinnati homicide detective and single mother of two, is summoned in the middle of the night to the scene of a particularly gruesome murder. There, a naked, hideously burned young man is handcuffed to the wheel of his car. A deathbed interrogation reveals the perpetrator to be a woman, and Sonora soon learns that the murderess has a history of torching her victims. After a series of suspenseful developments, it soon becomes painfully evident that the killer is watching Sonora's every move and that the detective and those she loves are potential targets. To anticipate the next maneuver and to catch this twisted sociopath takes all of Sonora's tough police experience and nerve. Hightower's first mystery novel, Satan's Lambs (LJ 5/1/93), was well received, and this follow-up is no less riveting. Recommended for fiction collections.?Sheila Riley, Smithsonian Inst. 4.0 out of 5 stars Fiery madness, September 3, 2005
This review is from: Flashpoint (Mass Market Paperback)
Homicide Detective Sonora Blair is a single mother, raising two young children and coping with the strain of just being a Homicide Detective with its entree into the world of evil. Sometimes, the sheer horror of her job, much as she loves it, overwhelms her, leaving her with a burning ulcer and horrifying nightmares. A madwoman who looks frighteningly like Sonora, begins a reign of terror against men, tricking them into situations where she handcuffs them to the steering wheel of their cars, douses them with petrol and sets them alight. When the madwoman threatens the lives of her children, Sonora lives with the daily horror of leaving them to go to work and resorts to leaving them with her brother, but when her brother dies in the same violent way, Sonora is driven to the point of breakdown and the questioning of her choice of professions. While it's terrifying to think that this kind of evil madness exists, Lynn Hightower nevertheless writes a tight, fascinating crime story which keeps you reading, long after lights out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Right at home, January 29, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Flashpoint (Mass Market Paperback)
Being from Southern Ohio, this book was like reading something about someone I knew. It was homey and the characters were easy to respond to and understand. The entire story flowed gracefully from one point to the next. Any one who can mention Ale 8 One in a novel is a readable author in my book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Specialist Blair nabs her perpetrator, July 16, 1998
This review is from: Flashpoint (Mass Market Paperback)
Men getting burned alive in a car - a serial killer- is how things begins. Specialist Blair has things figured out and finds out who the perp is, just can't quite get her hands on the perp. Intriguing, exciting. Blair has her own ups & downs in this thing which adds to the excitement. Blair eventually gets her hands on this perp after losing someone close to her. This is the first book I have read by Hightower and I just may buy the other two she has written, There is never a boring moment in the whole book. I would encourage you to give this one a try, well written and flows well.
