Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2–4—Pennypacker ably continues the adventures of Flat Stanley, originated by Jeff Brown, in this short chapter book. Having been flattened by a falling bulletin board, the half-an-inch-thick boy uses his unique physique to good advantage, mailing himself places, slipping under doors, and wriggling through thin cracks. In this installment, Stanley Lambchop receives a letter from Sir Abu Shenti Hawara, who offers him a chance to go to Egypt and assist on an important archaeological dig. He travels via airmail in an envelope provided by Hawara. Once there, Stanley befriends a girl named Amisi. Together, they thwart a group of thugs intent on thieving treasures from an ancient tomb. The narrative is filled with touches of lighthearted humor. The story stands on its own, and the exposition explaining Stanley's previous adventure foiling art thieves seems unnecessary. Large font and a generous proportion of sharp-angled cartoon drawings make this book a quick and easy read. Appended are a fact sheet on Egypt and a teaser chapter from the next installment in the series, certain to hook readers into coming back for more.—Madigan McGillicuddy, Los Angeles Public Library

I bought this to read to my class after reading all of the other Flat Stanley books. The kids loved the adventures! It's great to see that the stories are being continued even though Jeff Brown is no longer with us.

These are very cool books with an interesting history. The original Flat Stanley appeared in 1964 and five more books appeared between then and 2003. When the original author, Jeff Brown, passed away in 2003, the series was converted to the "...Worldwide Adventures" line. These new books, (there are at least ten), have been written by a variety of authors.

This adventure was written by Sara Pennypacker, the well known author of the very engaging "Clementine" books. (Clementine is a cheerful, high-energy girl who always has the best intentions but whose efforts, (say, cutting the neighbor girl's hair), often end up in disaster.)

In this episode Flat Stanley is mailed to Egypt to help explore a recently discovered tomb. He's the logical choice since he can fit between cracks in the stones. There are grave robbers, skullduggery and lurking.

These books have more going for them than just the "flat" gimmick, although that is a pretty good hook. The overall vibe is one of gung-ho good-guy adventure. The deadpan acceptance by everyone of Stanley's flatness has a pretty subtle positive message. The good-guys versus bad-guys angle is always clear and crisply presented. There is a lot of dry humor and just a little bit of an arch kidding of the material in the narrative. For an early chapter book there is actually a surprisingly generous helping of interesting facts about Egypt, including tombs, hieroglyphics, the culture and geography, and so on.

So, while at one level the books are sort of silly, they are written with flair and energy and touch a lot of early readers' favorite bases. Certainly this book would be a zippy and engaging addition to the library and a nice choice to try on an early reader.

Please note that I found this book while browsing the local library's Kindle books, and downloaded it for free. I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

I would recommend you to read all the Flat Stanley books because tons of funny things happen in them. Let's talk about Flat Stanley #2. First, Stanley received a letter that said, "Go to Egypt." So, he went to Egypt. When he was in the market, somebody grabbed him by the arm! They started to pull Flat Stanley to their secret place.

Sir Hawara said, "Flat Stanley, find the grave of Khufufull." Sir Hawara and his guards went to the back of the pyramid. There was a crack in back of the pyramid. "Flat Stanley go into the crack and get the script." Sir Hawara told Flat Stanley. After he finds the script, he found a secret door. Sir Hawara was outside. He went inside the pyramid. Then, Flat Stanley ran into an office (in the city) and called the police.

This is the first flat Stanley book that I have read but I really enjoyed how much detail there was in the adventure that Stanley took to Egypt. I like the fact that the author includes many of the cultural aspects of Egypt and many of the customs they have. This book could be very useful in a history or geography classroom. I also like the fact that there are little lessons of having good manners throughout the book. This is a must read!

It's about Flat Stanley saving the world from the Egyptian grave robbers who were trying to take the scrolls from the pyramid.
