Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2–4—Capitalizing on the extremely popular (and more than 40-year-old) character created by Jeff Brown, Pennypacker's new travel-themed series features the same tongue-in-cheek humor and earnest, goody-two-shoes sensibility of the original. Here, the flattened-by-a-bulletin-board boy and the rest of the Lambchop family go on vacation to Mount Rushmore, where Stanley and his brother share an adventure with a young gold miner named Calamity Jasper. Stanley's unique abilities allow him to shine as a hero, causing some friction with Arthur, but in the end, they work together to save the day. Readers will find authenticity and humor in the siblings' rivalry, and Calamity Jasper, with her over-the-top Western dialogue, is a perfect slapstick foil to the boys. As an added bonus, interesting historical and geographical information is included in the story and related facts are appended. Though the modernized, cartoon pencil sketches are not as delightfully ridiculous as the artwork in the original series, they integrate well with the plot. Educational and fun, this action-filled tale makes a great choice for early-chapter-book collections; it will surely cause a resurgence of interest in the original series, as well as a desire to read the subsequent installations in the reboot.—Nicole Waskie, Chenango Forks Elementary, Binghamton, NY

Review

“Flat Stanley is back and better than ever. Pennypacker’s revival of this perennially popular character should engender great enthusiasm and may even create new fans for this old favorite.” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))

I am 6 years old and Flat Stanley books are almost the best books I have ever read. I really like the adventures that Flat Stanley goes on in his stories. I have read 1 and 2 of the worldwide adventures and they are amazing books.

These stories are at a higher reading level than the Magic Tree House series, But just as fun to read. They are at a 4th grade reading level, so if your 7 year old is still at a 2nd grade reading level, these would be a little tricky, but would make a good book to read out loud.
I would also, recommend the A to Z mystery books "Mayflower Treasure hunt" and "The White HOuse, White Out! pluse lots more

And the series Capital Mysteries by Ron Roy are at a 4th grade reading level. And all have a little bit to do with the world around us and Adventure and Mysteries.

Flat Stanley's ill fate of becoming flat and not going back to normal has become a useful tool for him. In this book Stanley and his family are traveling to South Dakota to visit Mount Rushmore. The family thought this would give them an opportunity to get away from all the neighbors stares and gossip for a bit. However, things never work out quite like we expect. When Stanley's brother Arthur finds himself in a bit of trouble, Stanley steps in to save his life. In fact, Flat Stanley saves the day multiple times on one short trip. This gives him more media attention and kudos from the park ranger. It is then Stanley who speaks up to share the attention with his brother. Why you ask? Read for yourself to find out.

The book is written as an early reader chapter book. My seven year old could easily read the Flat Stanley series or have me read them to him. The adventures are a bit far fetched for children their age, but what is fiction for if not for big adventures. I enjoyed the story and the illustrations.

My niece told me about Flat Stanley and then sent me a "flat" version of herself to travel with and then write back to her and her class about where we went. It is to help the kids learn about geography. I ordered the book to get an idea of how the author of the Flat Stanley's series handled this. An interesting concept and a great way to teach the kids about places. I would not have known about the book if I had not received my assignment.

Amazon credits this as *by* Jeff Brown and since I'd never heard of this follow up series I was rather disappointed to find out it is not written by him at all, only based on his character. Anyway, the actual author, Sara Pennypacker, did a nice job here and I was well pleased with this start to a series about Stanley while he is still flat. Now since he is cured in the original book, I guess we are to assume these adventures occur during that time. I was always upset as a kid that Stanley was fixed as I thought that he would have had some great escapades while he was flat and this book goes to show just what he can get up to as the family takes a trip to Mt. Rushmore and Stanley's flat-ness saves the day. Recommended for kids who like the "Andrew Lost" series.

I had to buy this book after our dog ate the copy my son brought home from school. As we read it together I was impressed with the storyline and its ability to keep my six year old son's attention (that isn't always easy). I have since picked up a few other Flat Stanley books for his collection.

My seven year old son loves theses books. He can read them with very little help and help him with his imagination. I rate these books a 5.

Flat Stanley is a great read for younger boys. My 6 year old begs me to "read just one more chapter" everytime we read one of these books.
