Before Joe Ely, Butch Hancock, and Jimmie Dale Gilmore established themselves individually among the leading lights of Texas music, the boyhood buddies teamed in this early-'70s band. Three decades later, a 2002 reunion performance on the Austin City Limits series finds their bonds of friendship even stronger than their musical bonds. Dressed for the special occasion in matching black cowboy shirts, the trio ease their way through a 17-song, 75-minute performance while swapping memories and sharing jokes with the Austin crowd. Instead of digging deeply into their individual catalogs, they concentrate on the collaborations from that year's Now Again reunion album, finding common ground for Hancock's Dylanesque rasp and harmonica, Gilmore's tremolo warble, and Ely's harder-rocking intensity. As their voices blend in unique harmonies that are somehow both ethereal and earthy, highlights extend from the big sky, Lone Star metaphysics of "Down in the Light of the Melon Moon" to the roadhouse twang of "I Thought the Wreck Was Over." They pay tribute to fellow Texas songwriters with spirited revivals of Terry Allen's "Gimme a Ride to Heaven" and Townes Van Zandt's "White Freight Liner Blues," with guitarist Rob Gjersoe putting an electric charge into the predominantly acoustic arrangements. Gilmore proclaims the evening "fabulously wonderful," and the appreciative audience plainly agrees. --Don McLeese

5.0 out of 5 stars Flatlanders - Absolute Best Video November 6, 2004
By Annie
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
For anyone who is a Flatlanders fan but has never seen them in concert this DVD is a must. I have been to several of their concerts and watching this is as close to being there as you can get without being there. They are in top form and do an absolutely wonderful concert. Many of the songs are from their CD, Now Again and are all very well done as is the CD. Butch Hancock plays the harmonica on several songs and his talent is very impressive. He doesn't seem to play it as much at live concerts so anyone seeing this DVD is actually getting a bonus!! They do a rendition of "Gimme a Ride to Heaven," and it is really rockin' tune which it is apparent they all like doing the song. I have seen bootleg videos of the Flatlanders and, of course, they seem very amateur compared to this DVD and now that I have this I will probably not watch them again. The Flatlanders band is always very good, but they are exceptional on this DVD. Robbie Gjersoe, the lead guitarist is wonderful. Watching him is like watching a show in itself. He gives his all and the Flatlanders are lucky to have him. Joe Ely and Jimmie Dale Gilmore do the same superb job they do on all their albums. I got the DVD in today's mail and have already watched it three times and will watch it many more times in the future. The only thing missing (as far as I am concerned) was "West Texas Waltz", that I have seen them do at every concert and Jimmie always dances while he does it. But, in all fairness, there are 17 songs on the DVD, so I guess they couldn't do everything!! "Dallas" is fantastic, as usual. If you are a Flatlanders fan you can't go wrong with this--it's worth much more than the price I paid for it!! Read more ›

5.0 out of 5 stars Anything but "Flat" August 13, 2005

Excellent concert as usual from Austin City Limits. Individually, these guys are great musicians and songwriters but collectively as "The Flatlanders" they really shine.

The lead guitarists timely kick @$$ licks are the icing on the cake!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Flatlanders - infectious good times February 17, 2012
Format:DVD
~ As I write this review there are already seven 5-star reviews of this DVD on Amazon. I am going to make that eight. This 75 minute concert recorded 21 June 2002 and released in 2009 was the source for a half hour segment of Austin City Limits. The concert presents the three singer / song writers at the top of their game, and it is obvious that Joe, Jimmy, and Butch enjoy performing together and have a strong mutual respect for each other. These three guys are just having fun on stage, and we get to watch them have fun. It is a joy to see them tossing the lead back and forth during many of the songs.
~ As other reviews have mentioned, the majority of the tunes are from their "Now Again" CD plus a few songs from their individual solo careers. While most of the songs are co-written by some combination of Joe / Jimmy / Butch, but they so set aside two songs to pay tribute to two other great Texas song writers: Terry Allen and Townes van Zandt.
~ The backing band is excellent, with versatile guitarist Gary Gjersoe getting plenty of solo space.
~ As one would expect from an ACL production, the sound and camera work are excellent.
~ Highly recommended for anyone interested in progressive country music and infectious good times. Even if you have never been to Texas, close your eyes and this video will transfer you to a Texas roadhouse or dance hall.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the purchase! September 15, 2005
Format:DVD
Not having seen any live performances of the group, this DVD gave me that opportunity. I wish there were other performances that were available to buy. I love the sound and especially Gilmore's voice. Can't get enough!

Excellent from beginning to end period!!! The "Flatlanders" are a "Texas Super Group". You get a legendary line-up of: Joe Ely on guitar, vocals, Jimmie Dale Gilmore on guitar, vocals, Butch Hancock on guitar & vocals, Rob Gjersoe on lead guitar, vocals, Gary Herman on bass & vocals and Rafael Gayol on drums.

You get 17 great songs with an approximate running time of 75 minutes. The song set is listed in the Amazon product description, so there is no need to repeat it here. This concert was filmed June 21, 2002. This is another "Great" one, and I highly, gladly recommend it. Thanks!!!
