Great Basic Information,
By A Customer
This review is from: Flatter Your Figure (Paperback)
This is a wonderful book if you would like plain, common-sense, timeless information about which styles will flatter your figure, conceal your figure flaws, and enhance your positive features. This is a short book, with an extensive table of illustrated styles from top to bottom. While reviewing some fashion guides, some reviewers mentioned that there weren't any photos or pictures! No such problem with this book.I was convinced of the utility of this book when the chart said a square-shaped neckline would flatter and enhance my upper body and help to deflect attention from wide hips. I got such a shirt, and I was amazed at how much better I look. I got two compliments on the same day. I can't wait to put other style advice into practice. I do regret only a few things about this book, which prevented me from giving the book five stars. I would have liked more information about fabric weights and textures which would be flattering for certain body types; and also, more information on shoe styles which would also flatter foot shapes. I have long, very narrow feet and would have liked information on how to make them look less like skis! I have a friend with wide, block-like feet who would like to create the illusion of more narrow feet. Perhaps Ms. Larkey will soon create an updated edition (please!) that would address these areas. I would recommend this [low]-priced book to anyone of any age who wants solid advice about which styles would suit and flatter her figure.

Read this book and improve your look,

No book is perfect but do not miss this book based on a few flaws. This is the best book for finding clothes that will look wonderful on you.Yes the models are older and the photos are a little dated but the real meat of the book is timeless. I sew my own clothing and with this book I now know which patterns will never ever look good on me. I have saved so much time and money with this book. I read it through and then went shopping using my new knowledge. I could only find two tops that the book told me would look good, and indeed they did and I went home with them. It was a pleasant change from trying on every thing that caught my eye until I found something that I looked good in. I even tried a few things the book said I would look lousy in, and yes I did look lousy. This is a wonderful book. I've tried lots of other books to make yourself look better, like the HOAX system. This book is the very best. It tells you all the little details will make you look your best. It even covers little things like which cuffs will look good on you. I recommend this book highly.

Great, but a bit out of date,

This book has some great basic info about the shapes and styles of clothing that look best on your figure. However, it was written ten years ago and a number of the "classic" styles included are not found anymore. The book also seems to be geared (style-wise)towards creating a flattering but matronly look. Figure-challenges occur at all ages, not just in women over 50. An updated version of the book would be most helpful.

A book that really enhances a women's self esteem,
By spike@spikebizcoach.com (Portland, Oregon) - See all my reviews

As a business providing training and products in the image and fashion industry, I have sold over 2000 of these books. I have used it in seminars of 10 - 500. Women love this books philosophy on how valuable women are, how to break through the myths of fashion and value their own bodies shape and how to recognize styles that create their own fashion message. I recommend this book to all women. Grab a couple of friends, go through this workbook style book and transform your esteem and your style.

Excellent overview,
By A Customer
This review is from: Flatter Your Figure (Paperback)
For someone who has difficulty finding clothes that fit, as well as those who sew and want to be sure the styles they select will be flattering, this book is an excellent place to start. Also provides recommendations for different effects, based on very minor changes in line, neckline, etc, which illustrate the sort of adjustments one can make to save a wardrobe without having to start completely over.

Figure Out Your Figure,

I bought 5 books on improving my looks. This one is the best of the five because it tells you how to figure out what figure you have. Jan Larkey warns you that the "flaws" you have had all your life, may not be flaws at all! A wonderful uplifting book, that puts the power to improve in your hands.

Timeless,

I have read nearly every "dress your best" book that I could get my hands on. It seems like while they all have something good to say, they will all eventually go out of date. Reading older books, I sometimes cringe at the pictures! And while the pictures in the newer books look great, I find myself wondering how they will look in 10 or 20 years. Flatter Your Figure is the most timeless book I've read so far. While Jan Larkey does focus on dressing women who are over 40, almost all of the advice is suitable for youger women, too.
Her illustrations of all the different styles of tops, jackets, and skirts included almost all the styles one can think of - whether they are fashionable at the moment or not. The llustrations of pants are the most out of date, I feel. Every last one of them (except for the "hip huggers") is high-rise - even the jeans and the "bell bottoms"! And there is no mention of a bootcut style anywhere. I paid particular attention to the section on swimsuits - not many books bother with them, and the ones that do tend to focus more on color blocking than overall shape. This one page is worth the entire price of the book. I had to dissagree with some of her figure assesments. My protruding derriere is an asset, not a figure problem that should be hidden! And she didn't have any advice at all for narrow shoulders. But her advice, and the reasoning behind it, is sound, even over 10 years after this book was published. I think this is the one book I'll be hanging onto for years down the road.

A well thought out system for flattering dressing.,
By Jennifer hayes (London, England) - See all my reviews

It looks simple, and it is simple, but a lot of work has gone into this system for discovering your proportions and how to dress to flatter. Unique. I've used the method with clients to great effect.
