Snappy, sensuous percussion-laden melodies...,

This review is from: Flautista: Plays Afro Cuban Jazz (Audio CD)
Herbie Mann, the most popular flute player to work primarily in the jazz idiom, died about a year ago in Santa Fe, his long-time home. He was still making good music and releasing small-label CD's a few years before he passed. This Verve effort, from 1959-60, is one of the best Mann records I've ever heard. Listen to the samples and see if you don't get irresistibly tempted to buy it. These are live performances from Basin Street East in NYC, done when jazz was still the preferred music of young sophisticates and many college students, and therefore could make some dough for the artists and the record companies. This is catchy stuff, and the flute goes well with the Afro-Cuban drums and vibes.

If you love the Afro Cubana sound, you will love this cd from the early 1950s. I purchased it at the recomendation of my older brother who in my opinion has the best knowledge base about "classical" jazz of anyone I have ever known.
