Book Description

January 9, 2009
In today's society friendships are more important than ever, yet the complexity of life makes maintaining friendships more difficult. We live in a society filled with so much "stuff " that we often lose sight of the importance of friendships. Friendships are essential in the best and worst of times, whether we are realizing an achievement or struggling with a disappointment. The absence of a friend can be felt when there is no one to celebrate a birthday, a promotion or another major accomplishment with. Friendship in time of adversity is a blessing. The absence of friendship in time of adversity can feel like a curse. "Flavors of Friendship" examines a core component to friendship: knowing how to be a friend. Eleanor Roosevelt once said, "Friendship with oneself is all important, because without it one can not be friends with anyone else in the world." In one chapter the reader shares a story of an unexpected friendship and cautions us not to close ourselves off to friendships prematurely but invites us to step outside the box and open ourselves up to finding a friend when and where we least expect. "Flavors of Friendship" shares stories and poetry for the many friendships about special times, special places, love and loss. "Flavors of Friendships" is an encouraging and uplifting piece of literature that warms the soul and brings renewed appreciation for the myriad flavors of friendships in our lives. "Flavors of Friendship" warms the reader's heart as the words on the pages move her to reflect on friendships past, present, and future. This book speaks to the various types of friendships, referring to them as flavors and reminding the reader to appreciate and accept diversity in friendships. The book questions perfection and expectations in friendships when there is no way perfection can be returned. We are challenged to learn tolerance and appreciation for the diversity in our friendships.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful Analysis of Friendships, February 6, 2010
This review is from: Flavors of Friendship (Paperback)
Wow. I was truly surprised at the way Zonya put such a positive spin on so many types of friendships. I even think differently about friendships I've ended over the years.

Zonya encourages us to appreciate all of our "flavors of friends" and to call on those friends based on what we need at the time. She stresses that like us, our friends are not perfect, but all add value to our lives. She also talks about our being ready to give of ourselves to our friends, as well. Friendship is a two-way relationship, not one, and I enjoyed reading her examples of sacrifices she made to be there for her friends.

I'm especially glad that she wrote about her Mother as her friend. I'm especially close to my Mom, and as an adult, I do place a high value on our relationship. No one knows me like she does, so she is really in a good position to be the friend I need in many situations.

Once again, Zonya's poetry is moving and is a nice way of reinforcing lessons learned in her book. She used this same style of writing in "Poems to Our Daughters," and I like it. Once again, I read her book in one sitting, and I did not once think about putting it down.

4.0 out of 5 stars Essence Of Friendship, November 3, 2009

This review is from: Flavors of Friendship (Paperback)
Building friendships can be a simple or complex task to achieve. Once achieved, there are some friendships that last a lifetime and others that last for a moment. Each can be just as valuable and a learning experience that we often keep with us.

Zonya Brewton offers her insights about friendships in her book, FLAVORS OF FRIENDSHIP. She parallels different types of friendships to different flavors of coffee which become flavors of friendships. It's an uplifting and delightful read about the different types of friends and friendships. Throughout, she dictates her personal experiences and poems about friends and friendships and equates them to a different flavor of friendship.

As I was reading, I found myself thinking about my friends and friendships, while identifying with several flavors of friendship. I kept asking myself the same question as I read: what flavor of friendship do I have and am able to share with others? I enjoyed this read and friends of all flavors will enjoy it as much as I have!
