What great information, and the size of this book made it very easy to bring along on our first trip to Rome. On the plane ride over, my husband and I read the opening chapters which explain, in a humorous way, the whole concept of eating in Italy. We knew what to expect when we got there and can say that because of our "instructions" we came back raving about the food as much as the monuments. We stayed in the Pantheon area and were able to follow the author's recommendations and easily recognized her favorites which were accurately described for price, quality, and general overall experience. I can truthfully say that we didn't find one of Coviello-Malzone's picks that turned out to be wrong - and it was fun comparing her impressions of the piazzas and neighborhoods with our own. Don't go to Rome without this, especially if you plan to eat.

The restaurants in this book are, at best, mediocre and they mostly fall into the bland-to-poor categories. We just returned from a week-long vacation/family reunion in Rome and ate at 6 of the restaurants endorsed in this book. One was good. One was downright atrocious. When we had pasta the sauces ranged from tasteless and a waste of calories to indigestible. Veal was a poor excuse and a mark against Italian cuisine. In one restaurant I am almost certain the veal came from a can with a heavy, dark, canned sauce poured on top just before serving. Anyone who knows anything about food realizes that meat, and especially veal, must be simmered in the sauce. Finally on our last night we abandoned this book (shame on us for waiting so long), reverted to a Michelin guide, and found an excellent place; though it was more expensive, it was a relief.

We have spent a fair amount of time in Italy, though seldom in Rome. We have eaten far better elsewhere in Italy with far better experiences. Frankly, the spaghetti house near our home in the US serves far better food than 5 of the restaurants we tried from the book.

As a total novice to the culinary arts, I decided to take Ms Malzone at her word and signed up for one of her infrequent but special tours of Rome. I had been there before but never seen it through the eyes of someone with the passion and knowledge of a real Romaphile. Ms Malone knows her stuff and every restaurant or cafe we visited which of course, came right from her book, will be something I will always remember. Get the book and take her tour. You will forever be changed.

A fun book to read for anyone going to Rome. The author really knows the places to eat, especially where the tourists dont go and that's why I read this book. All the great places known only to the locals. Fun facts, fun stories, very enjoyable. Well worth your time.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Carol has nailed the "how" and "what" perfectly in her delightfully witty and entertaining guide to eating in Rome. I would encourage all Rome bound food lovers to include it in their luggage.
