Product Description

100 percent natural organic flax cold milled ground golden flax seed comes in 40 ounce package. In order for flax to be digested properly it is most effective when ground. Unfortunately, some grinding methods generate heat during the milling process spurring early omega 3 oxidization. This proprietary method gently grinds the seed without significantly raising the temperature therefore preserving the nutrients, flavor and extending the shelf life. Easy, convenient with all the nutrition. The Stober family farm has been in existence for over 100 years near goodrich, North Dakota, where flax seed has been grown for many generations. The John and Stephanie Stober family represent the 5th generation to grow up on the family farm. The Stobers started Flaxusa, Inc. In 2001 to market golden omega flax seed, a hybrid flax seed, that is 100 percent natural.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this stuff!! March 21, 2011

If you are used to the dark brown, coarse ground flaxseed, do yourself a favor and try this golden flax. Wonderful!!! I got it a week ago and have already tried it in smoothies, bread, muffins and oatmeal. It is very finely ground, which makes it all but disappear. Much better than what I was eating before! And the value was far greater than the grocery store. Highly recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good value March 17, 2011

Good quality, and cold-milled to preserve as much nutrition as possible. Only complaint is that the ziptop stops working once it gets flax in it, but I just put it in a freezer bag and stash it in the freezer.

1.0 out of 5 stars Flax was rancid February 19, 2013
Amazon Verified Purchase
Unfortunately, this time Flax USA was rancid.

I bought this brand before and I am usually very happy with the quality and taste.

When the product arrived (Feb. 2013), the bag looked puffy (with fermented air?). When opened, it smelled off. I tried a little...it was bitter - no hint of the usually nutty flavor.

I checked the expiration date (09/24/2014), so no problem there. Maybe it was stored in a heated warehouse, making it spoil quicker?

I hope Amazon will acquire a "new batch" and keep it in a controlled, cool environment this time.

It would be a great loss to not be able to order this brand anymore.

3.0 out of 5 stars closure September 2, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a good product. A bit overpriced at the cost as you really need to shop around. The one thing i do not like is the zipper closire could be built better. too many times, i have thought i had closed it well enough to find it popped open sitting on the shelve. Can't keep "critters" out that way. It seems that the milled flax is gatting caught in the seal and prevents for a proper seal. They need to revamp this seal.

Not sure if i will buy it again as i have transferred the product to a quart size jar that i can screw on the top. Lose the product info (i went and taped it to the outside.) but I know the seal stays that way.

1.0 out of 5 stars Smells like its gone bad February 4, 2013

I got this at Costco the first time I bought it. I used it in my protein shake and it was great. I went back to get more when I ran out, but they didn't have it. I decided to buy it from Amazon. I just received it today, and I was excited. I opened the bag and it didn't smell right. The expiration date is 2014, so it might be how it is stored in their warehouse. I just threw it in the trash cuz I just don't want to deal with returning it. I hope Costco will have it next time I go there.

I bought this at Costco years ago and would use it occasionally as a mix in for my yogurt (they were demonstrating that way and were selling it as a fiber supplement).

Then my boyfriend went on the keto diet. And he now uses this stuff like crazy since he can't eat bread. He has recipes for muffins, pizzas, and so on...I have to admit the chocolate muffins really ARE awesome (stevia, cocoa powder, flax, egg, butter to avoid carbs) even though I am not on a low carb diet and have no such restrictions. So it's awesome stuff...very good for you too if you need extra fiber.

To clarify it does have carbs but almost all of it is indigestible fiber so most diets don't count it. (It does also have calories...that's mostly from the flax oil)

However, you MUST buy cold milled if you're planning on storing it long term and not refrigerating. As I said, the first package I had of this lasted years. Cold milled is milled so that the flax doesn't heat up as it's ground. This is important because otherwise the oils break down and it will spoil in a few weeks. Cold milled has a MUCH longer shelf life.

Flax USA tastes great, stays good, and at this size is a good deal.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the consistency I expected. December 14, 2012

I have used flaxseed for several years in my smoothies, primarily for the Omega-3's and phytoestrogens (it has the highest amount of any natural substance). However, I had not tried this brand before and did not expect it to be ground as fine as flour. I prefer the nuttier taste and consistency of Spectrum Organic Ground Flaxseed (and no, I am not being paid to endorse their product!). Both are cold-milled, which is necessary, but Spectrum's is cracked rather than ground to a powder. Just my preference but I wish someone had mentioned this in the item description before I purchased this.
