3.0 out of 5 stars Good Quality, Not-So-Great Taste
Like the price. But didn't notice in the product description that this oil is preserved with tocopherols (vitamin e). Like one of the other reviewers, I found the taste medicinal. I've switched back to Barlean's. However I do continue to order this oil as a supplement for my dogs. The price and quality is just right for that purpose.

5.0 out of 5 stars Flaxseed Oil (Liquid Form) from Swansons, September 5, 2005
This review is from: Flaxseed Oil 16 fl oz (474 ml) Liquid (Health and Beauty)
I started taking Flax Oil for a number of reasons. A chiropractor friend suggested I take it for joint inflammation, and in researching the product, I found out it has other benefits as well. Since starting Flax, my joint pain is no longer significant, I have dropped 3-5 points in my diastolic blood pressure, and my total cholesterol and LDL are significantly lower. I surely cannot attribute all these positive benefits to flax oil alone, as I have instituted other dietary and exercise protocols as well. However, my research indicates that flax oil benefits all the conditions I mentioned. I actually started with "Highest Lignan Flax Oil" by Barlean's Organic Oils, Barlean's Organic Oils High Lignan Flax Oil, 32-Ounce Bottle. Later, I switched to Swanson's brand due to the lower cost.

Flax is a plant. The seeds in the flax plant are filled with flaxseed oil, (also called linseed oil). The seeds contain fatty oils called alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and linoleic acid. ALA is the omega-3 oil in flaxseed. Flaxseed contains both omega-3 fatty acids and omega-6 fatty acids. Flaxseed is nature's richest storehouse of omega-3 fatty acids, and contains more than twice as much omega-3 oil as fish oils, and it costs less , ounce for ounce. Flax also contains other important substances like lignans, which may protect against some types of cancer. The husks of the seeds are rich in mucilage. Both the seed oil and mucilage have many nutritional and therapeutic properties.

There are many potential benefits from taking Flax seed oil:

Flaxseed Oil lowers cholesterol levels, thereby improving cardiovascular health and lessening the risk of arteriosclerosis.

Flaxseed also contains plant nutrients like phytoestrogens. These are natural estrogen-like substances that can lessen the discomfort of menopause.

Flaxseed oil may lower high blood pressure.

Flaxseed oil helps some people improve their psoriasis and eczema, as it has anti-inflammatory properties. Flaxseed may also reduce the itching, swelling, and redness associated with certain skin disorders such as acne.

Flaxseed oil has a positive effect on rheumatoid arthritis due to its ability to calm inflammation.

Flaxseed reduces LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol (the body's "bad cholesterol") and lowers triglyceride levels. Research shows that flaxseed oil gives much better protection against heart attacks than canola oil or olive oil.

Taking flaxseed may reduce cancer risk. This is because flaxseed contains the richest sources of lignan building blocks, which play a major role in preventing cardiovascular diseases and cancer. New research indicates that the lignans in flaxseed have both short-term and long-term protective effects against colon cancer.

It is always important to purchase you Flaxseed Oil from a well-known reputable company. One tip: keep your flaxseed oil away from light and heat, as both degrade the oil. If you purchase a bottle of flaxseed oil, make sure to refridgerate it after opening.

The usual beneficial dose of Flaxseed Oil is 2-3 grams once per day taken with a meal. Pour out the amount/dose you wish to take and drink it or put it on a salad. There are many ways to take it.

The benefits of Flaxseed Oil are cumulative. Commit to taking it every day without fail. Like any herbal supplement, don't expect dramatic quick results. The results you get will be subtle at first and then build over time. For specific conditions such as Rhematoid arthritis, exzema, psoriasis, acne, etc,. the results should be apparent in 4-8 weeks. Be patient! Know that even if you don't "feel" different, you are sill protecting your body from the harmfull effects of many disease conditions.

Flaxseed oil is so beneficial for joint and overall health. The bottle has a no-spill cap which is helpful if you ever drop it. The one draw-back to the no-spill cap is that you have to squeeze the bottle very hard just to get the oil out. However, if that becomes a problem, you can just unscrew the cap and pour the oil out. Great product with helpful packaging!

1.0 out of 5 stars Bitter Taste, October 6, 2008

All 3 bottles of flaxseed oil were bitter. I returned them for a refund. I have been drinking flax seed oil for a few years now and this was the worst tasting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not just for your health, February 22, 2012

This review is from: Flaxseed Oil 16 fl oz (474 ml) Liquid (Health and Beauty)
I purchased a carbon steel skillet and began an experiment with the anti sticking properties of flax seed oil. I got the method on the internet which consists of high heat and multiple applications of flax seed oil on the pan. The method stated required 5 treatments lasting about 2 hours each. Using my gas grill on high, I was able to apply the same nonstick surface on the carbon steel skillet in half the time. Apply oil to warm skillet with paper towel, super thin coat. Turn on grill to high, put skillet on grill upside down cook for 45 minutes, let cool to 200*, reapply oil 5 times. Comes out light colored carbon and non stick as long as you don't wash with soap or use acidic juice such as lemon. In addition, after use and cleaning(hot water-paper towel) I put a few drops of oil in the skillet and wipe out with a paper towel. This was far superior to the other nonstick methods touted. Works equally as well on cast iron. This was the best price I found and the product is not just for your health.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Product, October 7, 2011

This review is from: Flaxseed Oil 16 fl oz (474 ml) Liquid (Health and Beauty)
I have used Flaxseed Oil for several years and the EFA 16oz is very economical. I don't mind the taste but I usually use on a salad in conjunction with salad dressing. When used this way it mixes with the dressing and you do not taste the flaxseed oil. I recommend this product and am purchasing again.

5.0 out of 5 stars terrific taste if you're used to it, September 11, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Flaxseed Oil 16 fl oz (474 ml) Liquid (Health and Beauty)
I was born in Germany and we had this oil very often together with boiled potatoes (skin on) or with cottage cheese. It has a strange taste if you're not used to it but, it will grow on you, since it is also very healthy.
