5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
Any book that can make my three year old grand-daughter
laugh out loud deserves a five star rating. It was a delightful story, very easy to read. It is a favorite of ours, that will be read again and again.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great artwork, contrived story
I love love love the illustrations of this book. They're so full of colour, movement and personality. Lots of kid appeal! However, I feel that the artwork is its strongest point. While I appreciated the value in the repetition and the rhyming, I found the story and the rhyme itself very contrived. I felt as if the author was trying too hard to get the rhyme to fit...

3.0 out of 5 stars Great artwork, contrived story, April 1, 2003
This review is from: The Flea's Sneeze (Hardcover)
I love love love the illustrations of this book. They're so full of colour, movement and personality. Lots of kid appeal! However, I feel that the artwork is its strongest point. While I appreciated the value in the repetition and the rhyming, I found the story and the rhyme itself very contrived. I felt as if the author was trying too hard to get the rhyme to fit neatly and compactly into the almost 30 pages that the story rests on.

That said, my 3 year old daughter loves this book and whenever she asks me to read it, I have to do so several times before I manage to redirect her attention towards a different book. She laughs hysterically whenever we get to the part where the flea sneezes. That reaction must count for something and probably has more merit than the opinion of her cranky mommy.

This is one of the best children's books we've read. Our 3 year old loves the repetition and after a couple of readings, has memorized the entire book. We have to read it every night before bed. It is a wonderful story, and the illustrations are fabulous. A must have for your child's library.

Entertaining and funny book. Nicely illustrated. Good for reading aloud, particularly if you include sounds (snoring, sneezing). My 3 yr old daughter really enjoys this one. She now recites it from memory.

1.0 out of 5 stars The Napping House, February 27, 2009
This review is from: The Flea's Sneeze (Paperback)
This is a cute book...not close to the book it is clearly modeled on, "The Napping House" by Audrey & Don Wood, but cute.

If you're looking for a classic, a keeper, a book that you and your kids will love (and recite!) for years to come, get "The Napping House"...Speaking from experience...It lives in our car, comes out at doctor's appointments, long waits at restaurants, during long drives, or is brought inside for cozy bedtime reading. Sometimes we recite it just for fun (yes, we are nerds). We find the Napping House in pictures, remember the Grandma who broke the bed (or the cat who clawed the dog!), see a rainbow and think of the book.

However, if you're looking for a cute book, a book you'll read with enjoyment but that will not live with you or touch you, a book that you'll give away when your kids have outgrown it, "The Flea's Sneeze" is fine.

This is a beautiful picture book with a fun, rhyming story, and super illustrations! The poor flea has a cold and he sounds stuffy when he talks ("Does eddybody hab a tissue for be?"). He sniffles, sneezes, and wakes up the whole barn! There are lots of animal sounds to read, too, which little ones usually love. Great fun for your 3-6 year-old!

A wonderful repetitive story, pre-school age children love this delightful book. The illustrations are beautifully done in this fun filled book. This is a great book for children who are learning to read. The repetition will allow them to follow and read the story easily.

3.0 out of 5 stars Meh., April 25, 2010
This review is from: The Flea's Sneeze (Paperback)
This book is very similar in theme to The Napping House. As such, I can't help but compare the two. And when I do, this one is definitely the loser.

It's not really such a bad book, I guess. The repetitive rhymes are a little long. There are a few non sequiturs - the sneeze wakes them up, and then the bat is baffled so his eyes turn blue? It reminds the frog of his old nephew? (Worse, this is clearly just to fit the -oo rhyme scheme, meaning you have to say "old nephEW" with the stress on the last syllable.) In some books this randomness is quirky and fun. In this one, it just hits me as weird and nonsensical.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun! Great for 2-4 year-olds, October 16, 2009
This review is from: The Flea's Sneeze (Paperback)
This has been a favorite of both of my boys (when they were between the ages of 2 and 4). And it's a fun one for me to read aloud. The artwork is charming, the story is simple enough to follow, and it's fun! A great book.

It also added the words "tumble-down" to my kids' vocabulary which sort of struck me as funny coming from pre-schoolers - but again, fun!

I have loved this for years, but I am now getting to share it with my 1-year-old. The illustrations are darling and the story is nice and rhythmic. I saw that it was compared to The Napping House in another review. We much prefer the Flea's Sneeze...in fact, my book-loving daughter won't listen to more than one page of the nappinng house, and she wants to read this book over and over. I'm online right now, looking for more books by this author!
