About the Author

Sherban Young wrote and designed the mini-mystery game Deadly Allusions (also published as Dead Men Do Tell Tales). He is the author of two detective series: one starring Enescu Fleet, well-aged man of the world; the second featuring Warren Kingsley, bodyguard not-so extraordinaire. An artist in his youth, the only thing Sherban draws now is to the occasional inside straight.

More About the Author

ABOUT SHERBAN YOUNG

Sherban (rhymes with "bourbon") splits his time between Maryland and Maine, and has often been called the next P. G. Wodehouse, or at the very least the current Sherban Young. He is the author of numerous witty mystery novels, including two detective series: one starring Enescu Fleet, well-aged man of the world; the second featuring Warren Kingsley, bodyguard not-so extraordinaire.

In his free time, Sherban is an avid tournament poker player, an avid cash game poker player and would be an avid good-deal-many-other-things if he didn't spend so much of his time avidly playing poker.

Charlene's Review:

Fleeting Glance opens with John Hathaway receiving a mystery postcard congratulating him on his upcoming wedding. All set to meet his future in-laws, he has other pressing matters before him, like assuring his fiance that the house they are using to welcome her parents, belonging to a reputed mob boss, will not be a problem. When his best friend, Hutton, is followed and assaulted, Enescu Fleet, retired private eye, takes on the case. With the cryptic message on the postcard, and a dead body, the mystery unfolds.

There are many subplots in this story, but without giving up key information, I chose to keep the description simple. Most of the action takes place in an old museum, and includes priceless art pieces, two detectives by the name of Fleet, the mob, a Maltese, and a nude woman. Although Mr. Young's previous novel, Fleeting Memory, was also an Enescu Fleet mystery, this is a whole new story and every bit as riveting.

I especially appreciate Mr. Young's verbal jocularity. Along with his sharp wit, he has perhaps, just a touch of ADHD, or at least his character, John Hathaway does. John's stream's of consciousness never fail to amuse, as he can be in a precarious situation and still notice the antics around him in a clever way. The suspense is kept at a constant throughout, but what I believe places these stories above other mysteries is the humor. Fleeting Glance is another 5 star book, as far as I'm concerned.

Between planning for a wedding and meeting his in-laws for the first time, John Hathaway already has a lot going on. When a strange post card arrives in the mail, John's plans are thrown to the wind and he enlists his best friend, Hutton, and semi-retired Romanian detective Enescu Fleet to solve the mystery, save their lives and impress the British Darlingtons in the process.

John and Hutton are a comical pair; John seems to be in a continuous state of confusion resulting in a chain of errors and missteps that will have the readers chuckling. While at first the book seems to be more farce than intrigue, as the story progresses, the pair's bumbling attempts to solve the mystery appear to be by design - and a very smart one at that.

Fleeting Glance is not a traditional mystery and there are plenty of moments of surprise and discovery. Plot twists and new information keep the story line fresh and interesting, and the ending satisfies any lingering questions. Young does have a particular writing style that can take some time to adjust to, but it does serve a greater purpose in rounding out John's character.

Fleeting Glance is a fun ride and kept me hooked up until the last page. Anyone who likes art, comedy or a light-hearted mystery is likely to enjoy this book.

Fleeting Glance was a light-hearted humorous read filled with many twists and turns. Throw in a few mobsters, a missing art collection, an active Maltese, a nude model and people who aren't who they seem to be, and the rambunctious adventures follow. The camaraderie between Hathaway and Hutton was real, providing more humor to the story. However, it takes the unwavering retired PI Enescu Fleet to step in and make sense of it all. It had an ending I never saw coming. I was never bored and hated for the book to end. Keep the adventures of Enescu Fleet coming!

‘Fleeting Glance’ is the second in a trio of mystery capers, with each novel finding our erstwhile sleuth, Enescu Fleet, solving dastardly deeds and murders in each of the different artistic disciplines; … this time becoming embroiled in the depths of a daring and elaborate art heist.

Once again, the dry wit, acerbic humour and razor sharp mind of author Sherban Young, are unleashed onto the unsuspecting reader in copious quantities, whilst seasoned followers of his work are treated to yet another exhilarating farce of gigantic proportions and daring.

Sherban sets a frenetic pace for his stories which is totally off the wall, with the ‘who did what to who, where, when and why’ penned in a seemingly haphazard way, yet which, in reality, is a complex and skilled technique of writing which undoubtedly rivals that of its more serious counterparts.

You really do need to have your wits about you, even as this profusion of complex, unconventional and truly unique characters go about their everyday lives …. everyone is shrouded in secrets, there are definitely no stereotypes here! Everyone is just a little larger than life, from their rather bohemian appearance and dress mode, to the foibles and eccentricities of their personality and character.

With Sherban taking the brave step of introducing some British characters into this rollercoaster ride of thrust and parry verbal combat, even the odd faux pas, perhaps more noticeable to me as a ‘Brit’, only serves to add to the quirkiness and eccentricity of the exchanges.

Blink and you miss the clues, which are liberally scattered throughout the story; invisible to the naked and untrained eye, yet perfectly poised to become yet another unique lesson in detective work, from our three crime busting heroes.
