This Album Went Its Own Way,
By D. Mikels "It's always Happy Hour here" (Skunk Holler) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rumours (Audio CD)
Often the passage of time diminishes the quality or aesthetics of a piece of art; the art (particularly music) becomes "dated." Many recordings from the Seventies--songs that were phenomenally popular--today come across as stale, corny, or contrived.Anyone remember "You Light Up My Life"? Such is not the case with Fleetwood Mac's masterpiece, RUMOURS. The energy, emotion, passion, and musical mastery of this album is just as compelling today as it was in 1977. On top of that, today's technology only makes listening to RUMOURS even more of a pleasurable and spellbinding experience. For me, having been a college student when this album was released, each track from this troubled band is a wondrous trip down memory lane. Among my favorites: "Dreams"; "Don't Stop"; "Silver Springs"; "You Make Loving Fun." And "Go Your Own Way" is musical nirvana, a glimmering, golden rock 'n roll keeper. The inner turmoil Fleetwood Mac was experiencing when RUMOURS began shattering the Billboard charts received as much publicity as the album itself. Despite the band's dysfunction--or perhaps because of it--members Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie, Mick Fleetwood, and John McVie were hitting on all musical/creative cylinders. As a result, RUMOURS is timeless, ageless, and enthusiastically recommended.

Love, anger, jealousy, heartbreak, spite and even more...,

As countless people before me have written and said, this is undeniably one of the greatest albums put out by any rock band--ever. I played it endlessly when I was in junior high--so much so I practically wore the grooves off the record! I got the CD early on and after so many years in my CD collection this remains one of my favorites.Yes, the band was going through some tough times when they produced this music--and maybe that DID help them to produce such a great set of songs here. However, despite all their internal struggles, you'd just never know of it by simply listening to the songs, the overall smooth flow of the song set, and the electricity and energy of the songs and the way they are performed. The CD boasts numerous classic rock songs such as Christine McVie's "Don't Stop;" Stevie Nicks' "Dreams;" Lindsey Buckingham's "Go Your Own Way;" a song written by the band called "The Chain;" and a song I always liked personally, "Second Hand News" by Lindsey Buckingham. The quality of the sound is excellent, even after all these years of playing this CD on several different CD players. I love the way the liner notes are so nicely done. You get great photos of the band and the lyrics are there along with the song credits. This CD remains-and will remain-as timeless as the best of the best of the rock CDs. The songs deal with relationships between lovers as well as the entire range of emotions that come about when people are in love, together or be it unrequited. Indeed, Q magazine included this album as one of the "Best Relationship Albums Of All Time." When you listen to this album and the incredibly thoughtful way with which the songs are performed it will truly touch a nerve in you! This CD is highly recommended for fans of rock, pop, and classic rock. If you fit into one of these fan groups, as I certainly do myself, you can't go wrong with this CD.

A Rock Classic,
By "rockchalk-mbs" (America's Heartland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rumours (Audio CD)
If you don't know the story, three relationships were falling apart while this album was being recorded: Christine and John McVie, Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, Mick and Sara Fleetwood. Each song told a different story: anguish, wonder, pain, confusion, anger, all written from the heart. It's amazing that for a group of people being pulled in several different emotional directions at once, they came together and put out this album, unequivocally a milestone. You can hear two sides of every relationship virtually from one song to the next, listen to "Dreams" followed by "Go Your Own Way" for a great example. Mick Fleetwood and John McVie formed a solid rhythm section, and Lindsey Buckingham was, and still is, one of the most underrated guitarists in rock and roll. This album is filled with some of the best classic rock ever recorded, from "Don't Stop" to "Dreams" to "You Make Lovin' Fun". Stevie and Lindsey do a great harmony duet with "I Don't Want to Know", and "Songbird" is just Christine and her piano, a soulful, threadbare ballad. Almost every song here is a staple on classic rock radio, and it's still one of the best selling albums of all time. This was the first album I ever bought with my own money, and it was money well spent.

Fleetwood Mac's best,
By jeu8478 "jeu8478" (Dallas, TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rumours (Audio CD)
Here it is, one of the sheer titanic classics of 70's rock. It sold 17,000,000 copies. If you've spent any time around a seventies station, you probably know half of this album by heart: "Dreams", "Don't Stop", "Go Your Own Way", "The Chain", and "You Make Loving Fun" are all mainstays of oldies radio. "Gold Dust Woman" was covered by Hole. So, if you're buying the album, you may be only getting 5-6 songs you're not familiar with. Is it worth it?In a word, yes. In three words, most definitely yes. In this album, the engine that is the Buckingham/Nicks version of Fleetwood Mac is firing on all cylinders. Rarely have many bands with multiple songwriters had them all on the same page like McVie, Buckingham and Nicks are here. I guess emotional and romantic devastation will give people similar outlooks on things - the romantic turmoil going on in the band during this period is well documented. The aforementioned songs, heard so many times before, gain new power in the context of the album. Rumours, which clocks in at a lean 39:03, has a terrific flow and keeps you captivated throughout its run time, and lesser-known tracks like "Second-hand News" and "I Don't Want to Know" are revelations. Fleetwood Mac, long derided for being glossy mainstream pop, are finally starting to get some respect and recognition as the terrific band that they are. This is their peak, a classic album that deserves its classic status.

The Most Influential and Personal Album Of All Time....,
By Luke Williams (Indianapolis, IN) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rumours (Audio CD)
Fleetwood Mac achieved worldwide success in 1975 after Americans Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks joind the band. With hits like "Over My Head" and "Rhiannon", the band reflected a dark, mystical persona that could not be ignored. By 1976, personal problems took their toll on the bandmates. John and Christine McVie divorced, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks ended their long-term relationship, and drummer Mick Fleetwood's wife left him and returned to England. Overall, the band hit an all-time low, crippled by mass quantities of drugs and alcohol. They hit the studio in mid-1976 to create a follow-up to their debut smash. What was to come would be something the band was not prepared for. Stevie Nicks contributed "Dreams", "I Don't Want To Know", and "Gold Dust Woman" to the album, displaying her dark, yet powerful role within the band. Lindsey Buckingham displayed his envy towards Stevie for throwing him out of her life with the hard edge of "Go Your Own Way" and "Second Hand News." Last but not least, Christine McVie revealed in her songwriting that she was ready to move on with her life with songs like "You Make Loving Fun" and "Don't Stop." Together the band carefully put the pieces of their broken hearts together to create Rumours, an album that would quickly become one of the greatest-selling albums of all time, yield four Top Ten hits, earn a Grammy as well as two nominations, two American Music Awards, four Rolling Stone Awards, go platinum 17 times, and have a major influence on several artists that would achieve fame years later. After the album reached number one on the American charts in 1977, no other album would replace its position for the course of the year. While breaking hearts, they busted charts and became the most popular band of the 1970's. The legacy of the album has stood the test of time and is still a favorite among a new generation of music fans today.

BETTER THAN THE FIRST TIME!,
By
This review is from: Fleetwood Mac - Rumours (DVD-Audio Surround Sound) (DVD Audio)
Rumours is my favorite album of all time. Hearing this DVD was BETTER than hearing Rumours for the first time. I bought a DVD player just so I could hear this DVD! It would have been well worth the money for "Silver Springs" alone. My scratchy old 45" pales in comparison to the beautifully haunting version on this production. The album was remastered especially for DVD, and the sound is absolutely incredible. I heard sounds and voices that disappear on the album. The sounds in "Gold Dust Woman" are chilling. And the harmonies, my God, the harmonies! If "Songbird" doesn't make you cry, you have no heart! In addition to the songs from the album, there is a "Making Of..." which is pure gold to any Fleetwood Mac Fan. I cannot gush enough. I'm in love all over again! Go out and by a DVD player and this DVD. You won't regret it!

I had the vinyl, bought the CD, never thought it could get better. I was wrong. Audiophile that I am, I can't get into anything that moves sound quality in the wrong direction, such as MP3. But enter high resolution audio formats, such as DVD-Audio and SACD, and I'm in hog heaven. We won't debate the merits and shortcomings in these formats; that's not what this is about. I will say that the DVD-Audio treatment, with Ken Caillat's expert mixing, has taken a masterpiece and made it better. Hearing the guitar riff in "Never Going Back Again" that had been eliminated in the stereo version was a revelation. And the inclusion of "Silver Springs", recorded during the "Rumours" sessions, but not included in the original release due to time restrictions, was most welcome. This has been a favorite of mine since first hearing it on a box set. Word is that Stevie, upon hearing the final playback of the surround mix, was moved to tears. The textures of the music just come through more clearly in surround. The stereo track included on the disc is the same as the CD, only with more clarity and detail. The Dolby Digital 5.1 track, included for those listening on DVD-V players, is the same mix as the DVD-A, but with more constricted sound. It still sounds great, but there's no comparison with the DVD-A track. There is an inherent compatibility problem with certain DVD players, such as the Toshiba SD2109 and 3109, and I also experienced this. But every other player I tried had no problem with this disc. I currently use a Pioneer player with both DVD-A and SACD, and I recommend a player for both formats. But this disc is phenomenal, and I suggest adding it to your DVD-A collection today, if not sooner!

Turn off the crap on the radio and turn on some real music!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Rumours (Audio CD)
I am an 18 yr old male college student who had never heard Fleetwood Mac before two days ago. My mom bought me "Fleetwood Mac" and "Rumours" because she knew I love female singers with extremely passionate voices with a mix of raunchiness and beauty, such as Alanis Morissette and Melissa Etheridge. She told me I would fall in love with Stevie Nicks' voice, and God is it true! This is what music is supposed to sound like. The radio is cluttered today with crap, from Cristina Agulera to Britney Spears to the Backstreet N'Sync 98 degree Boys and rap garbage, like Limp Bizkit and the horrible Lauryn Hill. Too bad the music industry believes that teenagers are only intelligent enough to enjoy songs with lyrics like "hit me baby one more time" and "you gotta rub me the right way". That isn't music. Fleetwood Mac is music. And "Rumours" is some of the most beautiful music with some of the most heartbreakingly beautiful harmonies in music history. This music has such passion and truth in it. This music has real tunes and this music was not influenced by its time: During the 70's when everything was disco this group took a stand against the norm. Hopefully some groundbreaking band will appear soon to challenge the music of its time as this has.

"Rumours DVD-A" heard on a DVD-A player is OUTSTANDING!!!,
By Bob from Las Vegas "Stevie Fan" (Las Vegas, NV ~ USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fleetwood Mac - Rumours (DVD-Audio Surround Sound) (DVD Audio)
For Stevie Nicks fans, this Rumours DVD-Audio disc is mandatory!!I recently purchased a Toshiba DVD-A player, a JVC Receiver designed for DVD-A, Monster audio cables designed for SACD/DVD-Audio, and I added one Infinity Beta Center speaker (designed for SACD/DVD-A) to my old stereo speakers. (I still need Beta Surround speakers). A set-up similar to that results in the best reproduction of the the Fleetwood Mac "Rumours DVD-A" & others such as Emerson, Lake & Palmer's DVD-A. The Rumours DVD-A sounds much better than the Rumours CD... I played them both and obvserved that the sound is clearer, has better tones, and is much more impressive, (and worth the DVD-A electonic equipment costs). On the song - The Chain - McVie's solo bass notes have outstanding tone on the DVD-A as compared to the CD!!! Just like he is in my living room. Overall, the sound on the DVD-A is outstanding. Good work Fleetwood Mac & Warner Brothers!!! When playing the DVD-A in Pro Logic, Enhanced Stereo, or in PCM, it also sounds very good. I haven't tried DTS yet. Stevie's "Gold Dust Woman" is the best I have ever heard. And, Stevie's delicate voice comes through brilliantly on her famous "Silver Springs" as well as on the "Gold Dust Woman" along with the powerful band music in the background. You also get many pictures with each song you can click on. You can play another section where there is no singing - only the instrumentals with Stevie, Lindsey, Mick & John explaining how they wrote or recorded each song. |
