Book Description

2011

From acclaimed writer and artist team Robert Tinnell and Neil Vokes (THE BLACK FOREST, THE WICKED WEST) comes a sensuous horror epic in the spirit of European horror cinema of the 1960s and '70s. The death of Carmilla, the seductive vampire, sets in motion events that lead to a monumental struggle between the forces of darkness and a brave band of mortals. Its members include a reluctant young Abraham Van Helsing and a mysterious monster hunter struggling to keep his own inner monster at bay. When Baron Frankenstein is recruited to add his scientific genius to the group's arsenal, Dracula and his undead kingdom face the possibility of total annihilation. Cover art by Dan Brereton. Suggested for mature readers.

"For fans of classic horror who feel that certain modern franchises have softened the edges of our favorite monsters, FLESH AND BLOOD has arrived to make us scared again." --FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND

5.0 out of 5 stars Graphic novel HORROR done right!, November 2, 2011
This review is from: Flesh and Blood (Book 1) (Paperback)
If you're a classic horror film fan, you need to read this graphic novel. If you're a fan of the great Hammer Studios, you HAVE to! I had been looking forward to this graphic novel since it was announced. Publisher Monsterverse have done an excellent job with their horror anthology, BELA LUGOSI'S TALES FROM THE GRAVE (also available from Amazon) and the idea of a continuing series of horror graphic novels intrigued me. Writer Robert Tinnell and artist Neil Vokes team up and create something very special here. Tim Lucas of VIDEO WATCHDOG magazine does an excellent job of analyzing the story in his introduction and I don't want to ruin any surprises. Let me just say that the story works beautifully and the love of the material shows on every page. This is exactly the Hammer movie I always dreamed about. There were also lots of little details that made me smile, from the reference to a specific Frazetta cover in the climactic battle sequence to the ultimate revelation that a couple of mysterious characters were exactly who I thought they were. Tinnell writes these famous characters with a pitch perfect tone and Vokes' images evoke memories of classic Hammer films while still bringing his own singular style to the project. This is a beautiful book. Buy it. You won't be sorry!

5.0 out of 5 stars FLESH AND BLOOD, November 5, 2011
This review is from: Flesh and Blood (Book 1) (Paperback)
After anticipating its publication since first announced by Monsterverse, I finally have book one of FLESH AND BLOOD in hand. And WOW, it sure doesn't disappoint! In fact, I haven't read anything quite so evocative of classic horror films, particularly the great Gothic world of Hammer pictures, in the past several decades at the very least. What a wonderful, satisfying read for anyone who has loved the genre, drawing upon all the elements of moody atmosphere and authentic horror that engendered an affection for this brand of stuff in the first place! But I hesitate to compartmentalize it as simply "homage" - this is something new, especially to the graphic novel form. Robert Tinnell's writing is smart and engaging from the very first page; an artful balance of fully realized characters, some of which you may well recognize, intertwined in a narrative that's both complex and a tense page-turner with pacing that's spot on - and to be plain, it's also just tremendous, frightful fun! Really tough to put down once begun. And the other undeniable reason for that is the visual power of Neil Vokes' artwork. I've read it several times, and after each visit, I've appreciated Vokes' unique ability as a storyteller that much more. His economy of line and dramatic blacks intensify the experience without losing the subtleties of human characters (and some not entirely human) in the midst of a fantastic war with the supernatural. The characters live and breathe...and yes, sometimes bleed! At every turn of the page, it's apparent that Tinnell and Vokes have Hammer horror in their veins...and together they've created something very special. I don't think there's anything out there quite like this. If you're like me, you'll feel as though you've stumbled upon one of the great lost classic horror films. Well, go see for yourself!

5.0 out of 5 stars Monsters Galore!, November 26, 2011
This review is from: Flesh and Blood (Book 1) (Paperback)
FLESH AND BLOOD transported me into monster kid heaven. Bob (Tinnell), Neil (Vokes) and company have totally hit it out of the park on this one. Reminds me of how I felt back in 1974 devouring new issues of TOMB OF DRACULA and WEREWOLF BY NIGHT, like I had discovered a whole new way to get my classic monster fix beyond returning to the creature feature films from Universal and Hammer that sank their claws into me when I was 13 years old and still won't let go. FLESH AND BLOOD is a creature feature feast. I want to read it again.... and again, and again, and again. Thick with atmosphere, characters you care about, beautiful monster designs, and bloody, sexy, stylish, cinematic storytelling that sucks you into the the monster kid universe right from page one and totally delivers the creeepy-cool goods all the way through. I LOVED IT and can't wait to see what happens in the next installment! Congratulations to everyone involved.
