4.0 out of 5 stars Vinyl Sounds Excellent! March 7, 2014
Format:Vinyl|Verified Purchase
Many of the reviews claim poor sound quality. I ordered the Vinyl version and have really high end hifi gear. I would say this records sound quality is excellent. I have not heard the CD but must say that it was definitely not the sound engineering as the vinyl is excellent. I am very picky and was hesitant to order this album because of the reviews of the sound quality. I am very happy I payed no attention and ordered anyway. Great album Great sound quality. ALWAYS BUY VINYL. CD's are dead!

5.0 out of 5 stars JBT Scores BULLSEYE February 6, 2014
Format:Audio CD
I love the melodic emphasis in this album. Sensational guitar but not as dominate as in the past.Great lyrics and one of JBT's high ranking recordings. Great to sit back and just enjoy the great talent. Thank you John for this outstanding recording.

JBT!!! Awesome! Just got my CD and after the 1st listen am very excited! The sound is new and different without being too out there. The melodies and songs carry well and are getting stuck in my head already! Thanks for making a new album we're looking forward to seeing you on tour.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good music, terrible compression and limiting. February 9, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Good music but not for audiophiles. This is the most compressed, limited dynamic range disc I own. Previous discs by this artist were held to much higher production standards. For the low bit rate music on their phone listener this may be all they need.
I'm disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars JBT at their best. July 5, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
John Butler at his best. The band is tighter than ever and every song is a joy to listen to on this CD. Sound quality is great. Miss Nicky but Grant Gerathy fills in great. These songs are great live, saw the band in Indy in June.

4.0 out of 5 stars Often Overlooked June 16, 2014
By Paul
Format:Audio CD
I own three albums by John Butler: Live at St. Gallen, Sunrise Over Sea and recently, Flesh & Blood. I always enjoy John's albums, but never seem to get around to them.

This latest release is heavier on the bass-line (drum and bass guitar) than past albums. I rated 6 of the songs with 3 stars. The other 5 songs I gave 4 stars. I liked a number of the song, but no 5 star keepers or 1 star bombs.

I good listen.

Flesh & Blood, the sixth studio album by Australian roots band, John Butler Trio is a sheer delight. Filled with rich melodies and poignant lyrics, this eleven track album goes down smooth and refreshing like iced lemonade in the summertime. Backing Butler this time around is bassist Byron Luiters and drummer Grant Gerathy.

Butler creates a trippy environment for “Blame It On Me”, riding a wave of trance-inducing beats laced with spacy effects. It’ s so fascinating, I find myself melting into the song, while imagining how enjoyable it would be to hear an extended version of it played live. The use of steel pans gives the super-poppy “Only One” an infusion of Caribbean flavor. This is one of those songs that can easily get stuck in one’s head.
“Spring to Come”, the opening track, catches my attention with a rhythm reminiscent of Rusted Root, and a message of hope and encouragement reminding us that ‘out of the darkness, only the light can come’.

Gerathy uses a very industrial sounding percussion to begin “Livin’ in the City” with. After a few measures, the song melts into a really funky rhythm accented with bluesy and psychedelic guitar riffs. Like Anthony Keidis, Butler rolls his vocals out quickly and very pronounced. I really like this one. “Devil Woman” is another track I am infatuated with. Tribal beats set a foundation for a wild old-time spiritual romp intended to exorcise a different kind of demon.

A splendid album to listen to, Flesh and Blood invokes an assortment of emotions and feelings. Some songs put me in my quiet space, as others make me want to dance. I just can’t seem to stop listening.‎

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Album That Grows on You April 21, 2014
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I"m a big John Butler Trio fan. I got turned on to him about a year ago and bought most of his back catalog. This album has the distinct JBT sound, but it's much more mellow than some of his previous albums. Because of this, it might not have the same "wow" factor some of your favorite JBT albums have. But give it a few listens, and it will likely grow on you. This album has a lot of sleeper appeal. In some ways, this album it seems less complex on a first or second listen, but the more you listen to it, the more you hear the complexities and and layers in the playing and production. Overall, this is a very solid effort. In fact, the more I listen to it, the more I like it. It may even turn into a 5-star album with time.

As some other reviewers have mentioned: The John Butler Trio are an excellent live band. Grab the Live at Red Rocks album/DVD if you don't have a chance to see them live - its an awesome show. But it's even better if you get the chance to see them in person. I saw them in early March and it was one of the lest live shows I've been to (and I've been to many). Highly recommended.

As always John delivers. I especially love the personal sweet song he wrote for his Grandmother. If you ever get the chance see the group in person. Unforgettable!

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
It's okay. I love John Butler Trio and was a little disappointed with this cd. There were a few songs I really liked but most just didn't do a lot for me.

There is nothing better than JBT Live. If you haven't heard him live get this CD, it is almost as good as being there.
