A GREAT SET FROM A TALENTED ARTIST,
By
This review is from: Flesh & Bone (Audio CD)
This is one of my favorite Lucy Kaplansky discs. Like her astounding live performances, it's filled with wonderful material -- her own compositions, up to the standards we've come to expect, and some other great choices as well.'Scorpion' opens the album nicely with a well-written, catchy take on the 'dangerous' side of romance. 'This is mine' is one of her strongest personal statements -- years from now I think this song will rate as one of her best. She does a great cover of the Elvis Costello classic '(What's so funny 'bout) Peace love and understanding', and a VERY nice job on the traditional Irish song 'Mary and the soldier', which she gathered in from the singing of the great Paul Brady (Check out his version on his classic album with Andy Irvine). All in all, this is simply a great cd -- and there's a hidden bonus, for those of you who can access it: an outstanding acoustic version of the Beatles classic 'I've just seen a face'. In order to play this track, which is 'hidden' at the first of the program, insert the disc and hold down the 'backtrack' button (equivalent of rewind on a cassette) to scan backward through the track to its beginning. Not every cd player will do this, but it's a treat if you can access it. Every cd Lucy has released is quality music -- it's hard to go wrong with any of them. And if you get the chance to hear her live, don't pass it up. She has one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary music, and she puts it to good use -- a great talent and a musical treasure.

What can you say about Lucy? She's got a style that's all her own. This album runs from achingly beautiful lyrics on "Scorpion" to sarcastic humor on "The Thief." And in between we've got happy love songs like "Love Is The Ride" - one of my personal favorites. You could say she's the next Mary Chapin or Shawn Colvin, but she's got a voice of her own that's unmistakably pure genius - this is an album made for repeated play.

Oh My God! Lyrics AND a voice!,

This album is absolutely addictive. I heard Scorpion for the first time on a CD from Red House Records. Bought the CD. Had to have more. Bought this CD. Now the songs just keep playing in my head - even when the CD is not in the player. Listen to this album once and you will listen twice. Listen twice and you will put it someplace special so you can get to it easily. Scorpion is great, but "Edges" and "This is Mine" will make you ache.

As my first Lucy Kaplansky CD, this immediatly got me hooked. After seeing Lucy live, this CD was recommended to me and was everything I had hoped and more. I have become a Lucy fan for life. (Cry Cry Cry is also excellent!)

That voice! Lucy Kaplansky is the best woman singer/songwriter around. There is something about this cd that will make you want to listen over and over. There is ONLY one thing better than this cd.....hearing/seeing Lucy live! She is a treasure! Her other cd, The Tide is great too! Buy em' both!

This CD is stunning. Lucy has a way with her voice and her words that makes me pause, listen and remember. I find myself singing in the car and humming at home. It is addicting and not to be overlooked. This is the stuff all classic CDs are made of and they do not come along often! Lucy is amazing.

Finest folkie album in recent years!,

Lucy Kaplansky's Flesh and Bone is an exquisite album of beautiful, musically and verbally interesting songs, sung in Kaplansky's distinctively lovely voice, with tasteful licks throughout. She understands human emotion, and has the rare ability to express those complex emotions in her music.

I am very suprised Lucy Kaplansky does not have the same following of Kathy Mattea or Mary Chapin Carpenter by now. Her music brings out just the touch of country and folk that comes together so darn well. I would say she sounds a drop like Emmylou Harris . I would definetaly reccommend the last 20 minutes or so of the CD as perfect 'turn down the lights and reflect on the day music.''. Expect good things from this artist in the future. I can feel it in my bones. at

WOW, A Very Good First Album from LK! :),
This review is from: Flesh & Bone (Audio CD)
Best songs on this CD are "If You Could See Me," "Scorpion," "Still Life," and "This is Mine."
Alittle bit twangy in a couple of the numbers, but overall excellent. I'm glad LK's music didn't follow the "twangy" road. The guitar work goes especially well with the vocals in this collection. They must have been very picky in the production studio, because they got some real gems as final products. :)

I had never heard Lucy Kaplansky before and I was in a CD store and for some reason her CD Flesh and Bone caught my eye. I ended up buying it and have never regretted the decision. I now own all of her CDs and she has become my favorite artist. Her voice can be uplifting, haunting, inspiring, and downright beautiful all at the same time. Her songs have true meaning and she sings them with such soul and feeling that you become captured by her voice. Her music and lyrics are refreshingly down to earth and uncommercialized. Anyone who loves guitar paired with a beautiful human voice will love this CD. She is an amazing artist and deserves all the praise I have just given her.
