3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I am a very big Richard Marx fan, he goes sinonimous with my late teens and early 20's. I listen to his music and reminisc. He is lyrically the best singer and writer in my book. This cd though disappointed me. I was not impressed by any of the tracks and non of them left an impression. The music seemed to drown out his voice, which is by far every fans favorite. I dont...

5.0 out of 5 stars One the most incredible, heartfelt albums I,ve ever heard., May 7, 2002
This review is from: Flesh & Bone (Audio CD)
Most people probably remember him for his 80s hits 'Don't Mean Nothing''Right Here Waiting'.

Unfortunately his commercial stock fell in the 90s after the 1989 masterpiece Repeat Offender. Repeat Offender had a angsty but fun sound.

The 1991 follow-up Rush Street was an excellent follow-up with the soulfull 'Keep Coming Back' with Luther Vandross and the beautiful 'Chains Around My Heart. The next album 1993s Paid Vacation was a dissapointment to me.

Four years go by and in 1997 Marx resurfaced with what I consider his strongest, most consistent album to date and what I consider one of the best albums of 1997. This album is nothing like the angstyness of his first two albums and is much more rich and heartfelt than it's predecessor. Richard has never sounded better.

The best tracks on this CD are Fools Game, Can't Lie To My Heart, My Confession, Eternity and Miracle.

Fools Game is brooding and haunting with a dark ominous atmosphere and old school beats. This song is almost opposite to Don't Mean Nothing. It's very cloudy and almost stormy. You Never Take Me Dancing has a much rockier feel with snappy beats that orph into more regular drums. Touch Of Heaven is funky and is one of the best songs on this album. It could have made a good impact on the chart. What's Your Story is more bluesy and fun. Can't Lie To My Heart is the best of R&B. It is very jazzy, moody, and is one of the best songs on this CD. Until I find You Again is the companion song to Right Here Waiting only this song is more powerful. My Confession is the best song Marx has ever written. Richard Marx pours out his feelings on this song with a melancholy feel. Eternity has a feel very much like Confession with moody lyrics and dark melody. What's Wrong With That is a very upbeat song that sounds more like some of his late 80s early 90s rock recordings. The Image also could have fit onto some of his early 90s material. Breathless is radiant with a jazzy soulful sound similar to 'Keep Coming Back'. Miracle is a beautiful closer to this amazing masterpiece. It's very optimistic and very upbeat.

In fact I love this entire CD.

What a great shame that this well crafted album feel quickly off the charts. I don't know why such banal acts like Desinys Child, P. Diddy and Foxy Brown while talented singers like Seal, Richard Marx, and Phil Collins are hardly gtting any notice these days. It's all just a joke!

Anyone who truly appreciates REAL music must buy this album. It offers so much more from the first 30 seconds of Fools Game than all of P. Diddys albums combined.

5.0 out of 5 stars Coming of age, May 13, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Flesh & Bone (Audio CD)
Flesh and bone is one of the best musical works in its genres to ever be produced. The Richard Marx everybody knows about...one can say, has 'come of age' so to speak. this album has some really amazing numbers, my personal favourites being My Confession, Can't lie to my heart and Touch of heaven. Until i find you again is like an anthem for the broken hearted..with every word making more sense as the song progresses. Outstanding work by the genius Marx. Its true that all his works though not getting as much fame and recognition as they deserve...he is, i can safely say...one of the best musicians of all time, and Flesh and Bone is probably the best overall album that he has and probably ever will give to us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Richard Marx: Flesh & Bone (1997), February 24, 2005
This review is from: Flesh & Bone (Audio CD)
In 1997, three years after the release of Paid Vacation, Richard Marx released his fifth album entitled, FLESH & BONE. Sort of a weird title for an album, but in the same manner, I like the album title. It has a certain ring to it that fits the album. Don't know what it is. Anyway, this album has a lot of potential and it is another one of my favorite albums, behind Repeat Offender and Rush Street.

FOOL'S GAME
Not bad. It could have been better.

YOU NEVER TAKE ME DANCING
I would have liked to have a little more music to backup Richard's vocals, but the song is amazing, and it is one of my favorites on the album.

TOUCH OF HEAVEN
The second & final single from the album. This song is not all that bad, but I wished it was done differently than what is heard on this album. But not a bad song.

WHAT'S YOUR STORY
This song, for some strangely odd reason, reminds of me of that song from New Kids On The Block: Hangin' Tough. I think that reason is probably why I enjoy hearing this song. Great song.

CAN'T LIE TO MY HEART
This song is really amazing. I don't know why. It just is. I really do enjoy hearing this song.

UNTIL I FIND YOU AGAIN
The first single from the album. By the release of this album, Richard Marx had been recording and performing his music for ten years. This song sounds so much like the material from the first album, mainly Hold On To The Nights. That is why I favor this song with a lot of pride.

MY CONFESSION
This may sound like a song that a younger pop artist would do, but Richard Marx took the liberty of sing a song that sounds like a song that would have been done by a future young pop star, and he sings this song extremely well. I don't think any other male performer would have been able to pull this song off as well as Richard did.

ETERNITY
The beat and mood to this song is amazing. Richard's voice is just outstanding. He just continues to reel off the great tunes. He really knows what we fans enjoy hearing.

WHAT'S WRONG WITH THAT
The music could have been a little better than this, but Richard's voice needs no improvement because his voice on this song, just like many of his other songs, is perfectly outstanding in every way. He really has a true and great powerful voice.

IMAGE
The title struck me when I first read the tracklist. But when I heard this song, I was more than impressed; I was stunned. Why? Because Richard is one of the few artists, who can make the song live up to its title, where the listener is impressed all the way around.

BREATHLESS
This is another heartfelt ballad that deserved to be put out as a single. It is real smooth and relaxingly beautiful. This is one song that I refuse to not listen to. And I advise that everyone listen to this beautiful song.

MIRACLE
Now, when I read this title, I already related to it because I am longing for a miracle to happen. I am hoping that I will be getting a job in my field of AutoCAD. I am hoping that I will find the one girl that I am meant to be with. Those two things are miracles to me. When I heard this song, it gave more reason to hope that those two miracles will come true. This is one hell of an inspirational song. This song will inspire you to really hope and pray that a miracle will work out for the best of each and everyone of us.

This album is definitely more than on the money and each of you Richard Marx fans should have a copy. If not, then here's your chance. If I were you, I'd buy a copy now before it's too late.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rich, Soulful and Wonderful!, March 3, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Flesh & Bone (Audio CD)
Richard Marx returned to the music scene with this amazing and dazzling CD, after a four year hiatus after 1993's Paid Vacation, and it was well worth the wait. This is Richard at his most heartfelt and grown up. The songs have rich smooth grooves on each and every one. It's definitley his most well crafted and orchestrated album. The first single, was a lovely ballad called "Until I Find You Again". It starts off slow and builds to a nice climax. It belongs right up there with his other big ' love ballads '. "What's The Story" is a great up tempo song about useless junk printed about somebody. It has great lyrics. My favorite is " Garbage That You Swallow Gonna Someday Make You Fat". The best uptempo song here is "The Image". A great ditty that sounds like vintage Richard from his late 80's and early 90's work. "Breathless" is romantic and smooth, just like his '91 hit "Keep Coming Back". "You Never Take Me Dancing" has an infectious hook. It's too bad that this album dropped quickly on the charts. Many people have their opinions about Richard Marx. He's remembered as a puffy haired pop star from the 80's. If people gave talent and great music a chance, they'd see that he is NOT the same artist. This album is as tight and masterful as an album can get. You need to get this!.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is why Richard has so many die-hard fans..., October 21, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Flesh & Bone (Audio CD)
If you've only vaguely heard of Richard Marx, or can just about remember Right Here Waiting, or even if you don't have a clue who this guy is, then buy this album. It's a mixture of lazy maturity combined with funky attitude. Richard shouts at the world, and wants folks to know, and yet he's a commited family man, and also wants the world to know. Eternity is slow and sexy, Until I find you again is powerfully moving, and My Confession is designed to knock your socks off. What are ya waitin' for? Talk To Ya Later.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 stars all the way, December 12, 2005
This review is from: Flesh & Bone (Audio CD)
The music business is funny. Bad songs become hits and some brilliant albums are out of print. I picked this album up somewhere for about $3 somewhere because I was curious. It turned out this album is about as close to a perfect album as you can get. There are 2 mediocre songs on here (You Never Take Me Dancing + Breathless). The rest is outstanding. "Fool's Game" and "Can't Lie To My Heart" are 2 of the most beautiful songs ever and would have been mega hits with the right marketing. First class songwriting. At the time this album dropped, Richard wasn't so popular anymore and it was widely ignored. A popular artist would have had a world wide hit with this album. All songs, except the 2 mentioned above, have great hooks and are excellently produced

4.0 out of 5 stars A change-of-pace R&B effort which Capitol mis-marketed., March 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Flesh & Bone (Audio CD)
Marx delivers a series of solid vocals by crafting the arrangements himself and shying away from the demanding style of his well-known power ballads. His lower registers perfectly fit the album's R&B groove. The bluesy feel is evident on tracks like "Fool's Game," "Touch of Heaven," and "Can't Lie To My Heart" - the first of which is alone worth the price of admission. Marx fans will hear the continuation of previous song-stories like those of 1991's "Hazard" and 1993's "Silent Scream" in the lyrics of "Eternity" and "What's Wrong With That." This is the CD that those who recall Marx's work with Lionel Richie in the early 1980s, and Marx's own "Keep Coming Back" and "Soul Motion," knew he was long capable of delivering. His most mature effort, both lyrically and stylistically, to date. Marx performed the album's only U.S. single, "Until I Find You Again," on NBC's "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" on 15 April 1997. Unfortunately, the CD did not sell well due to its narrow marketing at radio - Capitol made too safe a move in selecting a typical Marx power ballad as the first single, which only adult contemporary formats supported.

4.0 out of 5 stars A musical departure from earlier records., December 11, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Flesh & Bone (Audio CD)
Flesh and Bone represents Richard Marx's latest departure from the sound of his earlier records. Both his self titled debut and his sophomore effort 'Repeat Offneder' featured mainly guitar/rock oriented songs. He has slowly moved away from those roots and leaned towards a more funky, progressive, and less guitar-ladened sound. This new record epitomizes his evolution (not that this is an entirely good thing). Songs like 'My Confession,' 'You Never Take Me Dancing,' and 'Eternity' most vividly illustrate his new predispositions. These influences are clearly reflected in the real jewels on the record: 'Fools Game,' 'Can't Lie To My Heart,' and especially 'Touch of Heaven.' I recommend this record to enhance a certain mood of the listener; that is, if you are looking to relax, buy the CD. I do, however, yearn for the return of his old-style of music, i.e. 'Nothin You Can Do About It,' 'Should've Known Better,' and even 'One More Try.'

5.0 out of 5 stars Richard Marx Flesh & Bone, November 8, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Flesh & Bone (Audio CD)
Do I have hours to talk about this guy. I could, but I don't know that you would want to hear this fan girls rants, even it they are true but also biased. I love this man, I love that he is happily married, loves his wife and kids, of which all three are excellent singers like Dad & Mom. If you listen to O'Holy Night Marx Christmas you can hear their excellent voices, and Richards excellent Production of that Song which was released on YouTube.

He has said he never wrote a song that he thought was a hit. But the man has definitely write some of the most beautiful vocals and lyrics I've ever heard. If you haven't bought Flesh & Bone, Days in Avalon, Paid Vacation or My Own Best Enemy you are truely missing out. Do yourself and your heart a favor buy them.

The man is still box office gold, no matter who says different.

5.0 out of 5 stars Strong rock album, November 8, 2011
This review is from: Flesh & Bone (Audio CD)
I always loved Richard Marx' voice. In my opinion he has one of the best rock voices ever. On top of that he is amazing composer who crates complex and wonderful songs. He is mostly know from his beautiful ballads but if you dared to know his music a bit better you know that he is fantastic in performing really rock songs.
"Flesh & Bone" is an outstanding album. I need to say I was very surprised (positively) when I got the chance to hear this album from the very beginning. I had that luck to got Japanese 15-tracks album but even basic US/UK edition is worth any money. It starts with very strong "Fool's Game" and it is simple impossible to not like it if you like modern rock. Richard is reaching not only rock areas on this album but he travels into blues and jazz music in some of the songs. All songs are fantastically arranged and can be released as singles. I was so impressed with his "Breathless" - this song is one of the strongest he has ever created.
