Format: Paperback
A flippant title for this review, I know, but it does summarise the plot in just a few words. But seriously, first of all, a warning; even by today's permissive standards, this book by Judith Devere is a shocker in the erotic literature/bdsm (bondage, domination, sado-masochism) genre. It is certainly not for the prudish and depicts numerous scenes of variant sexuality in graphic and explicit terms. It is, however, extremely well-written for a modern work of this kind, and after reading it I am convinced that the author herself is no stranger to the things about which she writes. The storyline, although not perhaps ground-breakingly orginal, nevertheless gets new and exotic treatment from Ms. Devere, and is highly entertaining in its own right. It follows the transition of young, successful actress, Katrina Mandell, from a life of relative innocence to one of (to her, at least) unimaginable decadence. Originally blackmailed into a life of debauchery, sexual slavery and sado-masochism, she incrementally begins to embrace her lot, eventually concluding against all odds that in it she has found her destiny. The various characters in the book, from enigmatic billionaire Armand Levequ to "Mistress of the Island", Madam Christina SIN, and her cohorts, the profligate former movie director, Vladimir Romanoff (Vlad the Impaler), and Chinese Dominatrix CHIANG Ming, are well-drawn and developed; as, indeed, is that of Katrina Mandell herself. I highly recommend this book to readers of erotic literature, and to those who may just be curious about the mysteriously dark world of bdsm. Overall, I would rate the book 9 out of 10 in this type of genre.
