4.0 out of 5 stars Something about Canada these days, September 18, 2008
This review is from: In Flesh Tones (Audio CD)
Apparently the long cold winter of places like Winnipeg is conducive to forming bands, because there sure have been a lot of indie groups coming out of the GTW lately. This young band is from Calgary, which is somewhere up there, and the freezer has cooled this band's style into something resembling techno ambient vocal jazz. Which sounds like you might as well just puke now, especially as they sing falsetto like a little girl (seriously).

But oddly enough this works pretty well, kind of like St. Entienne covering Mew. I was drawn into the sound right away. They don't get everything right, the slappy drum touches really pale, they should work more conventionally for percussion, the rest is weird enough already. That, and tempo changes distract from the strong keyboard lines and the overall goodness of the tracks, of which no particular example stands out.

I don't know, I would be more comfortable with this if Jordon Hossack really was a girl, maybe he could wear a wig? But seriously, if you think the Projekt catalog is pretty cool, but needs to be more mainstream, then this is for you. It's certainly interesting, I'll give it a four for quality and intrigue. But I'm not sure where they go with this sound, the vocals edge into novelty territory; can you imagine the Cranes if Alison was a dude??
