if you're looking for the in-your-face angry vocals of stoosh then, this is probably -not- for you. however, if you know anything about skin, or about what she's about then you'll know that this is probaly one of the best moves she made. yes, this album is laden with emotional baggage, and skin does it with style. there is barely a song on here that doesn't appeal. having seen skin perform most of this album live before buying it, i might be biased - however it's an album that brings out skin's emotional side, she's still the same - bittingly satirical with vocals that could put anyone to shame. from 'trashed', to 'you've made your bed' to 'lost' this album is a real introduction to skin on her own, and she's still got it.

dark pop,

Skin's solo album is fine;it has lots of really impressive and entertaining moments in her well built songs, and i guess no one can say anything bad about her voice. She is talented, the music is not special;but it is mature and of good quality. Skunk anasie days are mostly over and most of the songs are not anywhere near the definition of "rock" except few of them, but this doesnt mean they are bad at all. the album works around personal issues without getting too personal and sticks to the common stories of getting over someone, loving someone, losing someone, being the 'other woman' for someone... You can think of this album as a much darker, much adult version of DİDO;it is an honest, nice album;will never make you wrapped around itself but also will not disappear for many years.

I really loved skunk anansie, and was gutted when they broke up. Like many others I had such expectations when listening to this album. I wouldn't say this album surpassed or fell short of these expectations, but I fell for Skin in a totally different way. This is a great album from start to finish, and has elements of hard-rock, electronica and classical all bound together in a folk format. I woulndn't consider myself a fan of folk as such, but think that it really works here.
Skin maintains here fiery personality, and even though many of the songs are ballads, you can sense her punk-temperment and makes this a ballad album that can be appreciated by those with a similar edgy personality. It is hardly a `Sarah McLauglan' album, there are no mushy songs here, just harsh full on impressive songs that really hit you in the gut. Like an Alanis album or something, you relate to the lyrics and feel what she speaks of. Skin is an incredible performer, and really is almost embarissingly talented and this album is a true gem. I can't recommend it enough.

I was in shock when I found Skin's solo albums because many years ago I heard about her working on them but never got to see them in the stores. Anyways, I'm happy to have heard at least her first one and yes it's true that the rock energy of skunk anansie isn't present but the soul and warmth of the ballads are!
I've always been a fan of skunk anansie's ballads and so for me this first solo album is something i can appreciate. There are good solid tracks here so don't get fooled by those who said the opposite. It's just that you gotta accept the fact that Skin was more in the mood to record slower songs at least for this album. If you're a true fan then this is something i'm sure you can appreciate.

Skin's More Personal Album,
By A Customer
This review is from: Flesh Wounds (Audio CD)
Although it is a big change from Skunk Anansie's albums, I liked it. Its a lot softer, and it seems to be more personal to her. This cd did catch me a little by surprise, but after listening to it, I got used to, and ended up liking some songs, and liked some others instantly. Skin has a very nice voice, but if you don't like softer music at all, I would probably tell you not to get this. I gave it 4 stars because it took a little getting used to for some songs. However, I am completely satisfied with my purchase. This review is more of a "heads up" of how this album is more mellow, and does not have the angry, political, Skunk Anansie sound that you may have expected.

I'd expect a much better (and slightly heavier) album from Skin. This is simply boring stuff for any S.A. fan or for any rock fan actually. Even if you try to be over-objective and assume S.A. never existed still there's nothing of musical quality here except her voice which is not enough to save the album.

Introspective masterpiece. This cd is about the results of broken relationships"FLESH WOUNDS">desire/hate, it's about getting through the pain. The lyrics are great in typical S.A tradition. This passionate disc is a must for fans of the Voice form Skunk Anasie, it's yet anther magnificent side of SKIN.

Being a fan of Skin's former band (Skunk Anansie) i was obviously expecting something, not necessarily completely different, but at least as good as Skin's previous material.Whatever the case, I wasn't expecting lukewarm and dishwashed ballads, that's for sure. I dont know (not sure i wanna know either) whether Skin has chosen to walk a different path but I'm quite sure that 1000s of her former fans wont be coming along for the ride, allthough, she is apparently picking up a whole new "clientelle" for her endeavours. This album is an injustice not only to Skin's past as a singer but to her voice as well. There's literally 100s of albums out there like this one, broken heart ballads we've heard before and, frankly, delivered much better than in "Flesh wounds". Before the release of this album Skin had collaborated with Maxim (Prodigy's DJ) and had done a song with him that gave hardcore evidence she could shift effortlessly from her rock persona to another field without failing to impress. A lot of people hoped this would be her new direction because from a musical perspective it fit her like a glove. Well, apparently she has thought things over and opted for ballads aimed at teenage girls or broken hearted 40yearolds. That spells tough luck for the rest of us then. One way of solving this would be working with musicians that have the appropriate ideas to accompany Skin's remarkable voice. Step 2 would be trying music more elaborate than the boring affair of this LP. Step 3, is insert coin, try again. Frankly though, I think this is a lost case because Skin might very well be the case of singer who's simply fallen in love with their own voice and everything else takes a secondary plateau to that. Oh well.... |
