4.0 out of 5 stars Cuthbert, GA.'s own James Fletcher Hamilton Henderson, Jr., October 23, 2011
This review is from: Fletcher Henderson 1923 (Audio CD)
French-manufactured CLASSIC RECORDS music CDs have long been out of print. This 1993 disc, like all their titles, commands collectable prices, when available.

.
Nineteen of the tracks on THE CHRONOLOGICAL FLETCHER HENDERSON and His Orchestra (CR-697),including several duplicate takes, were recorded within a five-month time frame. The last two, the unissued A and B of a 78, are from early '24. An eight-page liner notes book offers a concise Henderson bio, plus personnel, label, location and (an often approximate) date for every recording.

Participating musicians on various sides: Elmer Chambers (cornet); Charlie Dixon (banjo); Ralph Escudero (double bass); Billy Fowler (tenor/bass sax); Fletcher Henderson (piano); Coleman Hawkins (clarinet, tenor/bass sax, double bass); Kaiser Marshall (drums); Teddy Nixon (trombone); Don Redman (clarinet/alto sax); Allie Ross (violin); Howard Scott (cornet). Additionally, bells are used on track 5.

Naturally, these antique acoustically-recorded sides have limited frequency response, thus mastering and source material condition are critical. Records are remarkably preserved. Heaviest filtering is on tracks 7, 8 and 18. There's distortion on the loud intro of #14. Totally missing are regular ticks, pops and the dreaded skip. My 5 star rating is for general sound quality more than musicality, although that too is considerable.
