4.0 out of 5 stars Mid-career Henderson, February 9, 2007
This review is from: Fletcher Henderson 1932 1934 (Audio CD)
Fletcher Henderson formed his first band in 1924, and with changing personnel kept the organization going until 1939. After that, Henderson was staff arranger with Benny Goodman, although he did occasionally work with his own unit throughout the 1940s. Henderson, like Duke Ellington, was a pioneer in allowing musicians room for improv solos and flamboyance.

The selections on FLETCHER HENDERSON AND HIS ORCHESTRA 1932-1934 appeared on several different labels: COLUMBIA, OKEH, VOCALION, BLUEBIRD, VICTOR and DECCA. Among other musicians on these sessions are Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, Red Allen and Buster Bailey.

Eight pages of liner notes include band personnel, recording dates and a brief Henderson bio. Sound quality is very good, as are these 23 swinging sides. Great pre-big band era music. Recommended.
