Fleur de Lily,
This review is from: Fleur De Lily (Audio CD)
Jenny Dalton is a local singer/songwriter from Minneapolis, Minnesota. I have had the immense pleasure of seeing her perform as well as know her personally. FLEUR DE LILY is Jenny's first album on her own record label Glossy Shoebox Productions. Most of the cd consists of songs from her demo cd she had given out for free at her gigs a couple of years ago. Jenny wears her musical influences on her sleeve and it shows in her music. I am reminded of Tori Amos's first solo album LITTLE EARTHQUAKES throughout Jenny's music. Lyrically, Jenny uses a lot of her personal experiences as her inspiration in her songs. "Iraqi Sky" was inspired by a former boyfriend who is in the military and spent some time in Iraq. "Joshua" is a song about her former boyfriend. My personal favorite Jenny Dalton song is "Three Lilies". That was the first song I have heard from Jenny. I just love how melodic the song is. The main flaw with Jenny's music is that the songs tends to sounds the same. Jenny's vocals are rather limited but so are a lot of my favorite artists. The flaws are minor in comparison to the immense pleasure I get listening to her music. If you like Tori Amos, Kristin Hersh, and Kate Bush's music, you definitely will like Jenny Dalton. She sounds even better live in concert. Catch her if you can

I came across the song Bad Day almost by accident and wondered how I'd missed it before. In an age where one is tempted to buy an individual song instead of a full album I still try to discover whether a particular song is a fluke or is representative of a major talent.
Jenny Dalton is the real thing. Fleur de Lily may very well turn out to be one of those albums I'll still listen to regularly 10 years from now. Bad Day is outstanding but other tracks (Violet Walk, Cadence) are nearly as good and none are below par. Her imagery is skillful if occasionally a bit predictable or even forced but now I'm nit-picking. Her poetry is first rank. She's announced a new album this year (2008) and I hope there will be many more. The fact that she self-publishes is a black mark against the major labels and hopefully they will discover their mistake soon.

Not just another girl and a piano,
By Bill Barrett "ganesha7" (Boulder CO) - See all my reviews

I love this album. It is one of many fascinating albums that I doubt I would have known about were it not for internet radio. The obvious comparison is between Tori Amos and Jenny Dalton. But there are real differences. Jenny Dalton is not just another girl and a piano. The first time I heard Tori Amos' "Little Earthquakes" a decade and a half ago what stood out so much more than the sound were the stories that Tori Amos was telling. With Jenny Dalton it is the use of the piano as a harmonic rhythm instrument that is the perfect counterpoint to her beautiful alto voice. I have read and listened to enough of the lyrics to some of her songs to know that she actually does have something to say and that the ambiance she creates with the piano and her voice do have their have their roots in mental imagery. But music is about feeling more so than verbal content and it is the mood that she invokes when I hear this album that compels me to listen to it again and again.

this is very good music, and should be heard! You may like the REMIX CD
of the songs, called Carbon Lily, a bumped up version of the songs. |
