Book Description

April 1, 2003
Trying to strike the right balance between career and motherhood is one of the most stressful, heart-wrenching issues facing women today. Torn between the need to nurture and the need to work, women yearn for a way to have the best of both worlds. In Flex Time, author Jacqueline Foley shows mothers that they can get the life they want by changing the way they work. In direct and engaging language, Foley shows readers how to create a personal vision of work/family balance, figure out the flexible work schedule that best suits them, prepare a compelling proposal for flexible work to pitch to their boss, and much more. Based on in-depth interviews with more than 100 women across North America, Flex Time is the first such comprehensive guide that offers women everywhere much-needed relief from the hectic, unbalanced pace of trying to juggle full-time work with raising children.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Based on interviews with more than 100 women--and her own experience--Foley offers practical advice on how women can balance the demands of motherhood and careers. She doesn't claim to offer a miracle cure for time constraints but does impart inspiring stories of how other mothers have coped, using arrangements such as job sharing and working part time or at home. Foley suggests that women making a transition to flex time create a new vision for themselves, one less centered on career and more focused on the kind of parenting they want for their children. Women need to assess how much support they will need, how much work they can accommodate, how much income they can afford to do without, and how flexible their employers are likely to be. Foley provides suggestions on negotiating a more flexible work schedule as well as developing business plans. A helpful resource for women balancing careers and motherhood. Vanessa Bush

This review is from: Flex Time: A Working Mother's Guide to Balancing Career and Family (Paperback)
This book has helped me to better understand my options as well as give me the confidence needed to pursue my career and motherhood goals.

Once the baby arrives I guess I will know how helpful the book really was, but so far, it has provided me with a lot of valuable information.
