5.0 out of 5 stars Was a little skeptical
I just recently picked this book up. At first I was a little skeptical, not having read any previous work from this author or this publishing company, but I was impressed. I'm fairly new to flex and I found it very easy to get myself up to speed while going through this book. Whether you're looking for a book to peruse through or prefer to get in to the weeds of Flex...

1.0 out of 5 stars Too Light Weight
I perused this book and several others on topic at a bookstore. I decided on this because it's a Manning "In Action" book, I liked the author's introduction, and I was obliged to perform a too-cursory scan under the crappy fatiguing save-the-planet fluorescent store lights.

I'm glad I bought it used on Amazon, because it is quite light weight and probably...

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, February 9, 2009

Clear, concise format. Easy to understand, very easy to see the authors understand their subject matter well. Relative to other books on Flex, this one cuts straight to the chase. A must for your bookshelf!

I really liked this book. Covers a good array of topics in great depth. I'm a sucker for instant gratification, and it's not like you need to go into 10 chapters before you start getting into cool things. With each example, you're building real stuff that works. Definitely a good read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!!!!, February 9, 2009
This review is from: Flex3 in Action (Paperback)
I've been looking to get into Flex for awhile now, and a friend mentioned that he had read the pre-release version as part of the publishers early access program and said it was pretty good. So I said what the heck, I'll give it a try - and I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised.
There are a lot of Flex books out there and I can't afford to keep buying books every minutes, so the one book I get has to be it. And this book is definitely it! I've been programming desktop applications for most of my career, and I've been wanting to get into Flex so that I can expand my skill set to include web applications. I understand those universal programming concepts (variables, functions, etc...), so I didn't want a book that was so basic that it catered to people who have no programming understanding, yet didn't want to get overwhelmed with too much detail. And Flex 3 In Action strikes a good balance for the beginner getting into Flex, who at the same time wants enough meat to get a solid understanding of what's involved.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review by Jorge Do Marco Sylvain, March 16, 2009
This review is from: Flex3 in Action (Paperback)
"Flex in Action" is particularly suitable for Flex novice developers people, or even non-developers. Readers used to other languages (including (X)HTML and JavaScript) will, of course, make it out more easily, but basics are reminded by the author.

According to the title, one could expect the setting of Flex components in a real situation. But this book is organized into 24 independent chapters that cover the various features of Flex. The description of the components is in every case made clear by examples. This organization allows reading the chapters at will, and consulting when needed. In the other hand, the reader has to make a synthesis to get the various components work together.

A little criticism to end with : after reading this book, Tariq Ahmed gives us an impression of "Out of Adobe, no salvation". In the description of Flex development environments, tools like AXDT are ignored, leaving the developer choose between the command line and Flex Builder. Similarly, comparisons between Flex and HTML / JavaScript are often subjective, the new methods of development of these languages are not taken into account.

These points are secondary for a book on Flex. This is a book to clutch at when using a basic component of Flex. For advanced development, other resources are yet recommanded.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book!, February 15, 2009
This review is from: Flex3 in Action (Paperback)
The book is well written and the material is easy to pick up. It's clear that the authors put a lot of time and effort into it. The fact that it comes with the eBooks for this version and the future Flex 4 In Action is a nice bonus. It's full of useful examples and I highly recommend it to everyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great programming guide, February 13, 2009
This review is from: Flex3 in Action (Paperback)
This is an excellent book to use for Flex 3 development. Tariq has done a great job laying out the book in a way that a developer can easily lookup references and programming tips.
This is a good resource for anyone starting out with Flex development.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book to start with Flex 3, February 14, 2009
This review is from: Flex3 in Action (Paperback)
I have gone through some flex 3 books and this one has most of the things beginners or someone with working knowledge.

It has some typo but it goes with most of the technical books. But above all flex is covered very well with example. If you are looking for advance level book try our flex bible or advanceFlex tiware book..

5.0 out of 5 stars I highly recommend it!, February 9, 2009
This review is from: Flex3 in Action (Paperback)
I'm a huge fan of Manning's In-Action series. The In-Action series tends to cater to people who want more than a quick gloss over, and want to get into the "action".

The book doesn't waste time on fluff; it's fast paced, but the language stays casual and fun so it's easy to blast through it. The order of the chapters is pretty cool, like they start you off with the standard hello world and bit by bit build up your knowledge. What I really like are the small code examples, it's difficult for me to see more than 20 lines of code and try to understand what's going on, so the short code examples are easy to absorb.

Plus there's tons of screen caps with annotations that highlight and explain what's going on. It feels like the authors are speaking directly to you, vs. that academic approach of talking theory in the third person.

The bottom line is Flex 3 in Action is a roll up your sleeves and get busy kind of book that in my humble opinion makes it easy to get into Flex.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource, February 9, 2009
This review is from: Flex3 in Action (Paperback)
I am completely new to the Flex 3 technology,
I picked this up for a project I am about to start.
I was able to quickly navigate through this book and
helped me get started on my project.
The best thing about this book is I didn't have to read through the whole book to find what I was looking for and there are tons of examples.
Very well organized.
