Product Description

Carvin' Jack by Flexcut is a complete carving kit in your pocket. All six blades of the Carvin' Jack are made of the same edge holding high carbon steel that Flexcut's tools are famous for. The Carvin' Jack comes with its own Flexcut? Slipstrop and Flexcut Gold Polishing Compound.

Customer Reviews

The quality is very good just like other Flexcut products.
J. Hill
In use, the hinges drag the other blades along with so it's impossible to pull out just one blade without having to push the others back.
Bill Gallagher
The compound and the sharpening block are well done and work well the keep it razor sharp.

Summary: One would be much better served - and safer - investing in separate tools than to risk serious injury with this all-in-one device. The FlexCut 5pc Travel Set plus a Cutting Knife can all fit in a tool roll and give you a much safer experience.

I have a large number of handled and unhandled FlexCut carving tools, and I'm really happy with all of them. I wanted to get this tool to be more "portable" and be able to carve when the mood hit me, without having to drag out my larger case of tools. This tool, while it has an interesting assortment of profiles and could be useful, fails to fill the need because the mechanism for keeping the tools together is fraught with problems. The embossed nail nicks in the blades are tiny, and situated very close to the hinge, and require an incredible amount of force to move. My nails have broken before they actually moved the blade, and this forces me to resort to dangerous moves to get the blade I want. In use, the hinges drag the other blades along with so it's impossible to pull out just one blade without having to push the others back. These blades are in shapes that make it hard to push one without nicking oneself on the others. Since this is a FlexCut tool of legendary sharpness the nicks are deep, but at least a clean cut heals quickly.

By FlexCut's own admission it's easy to have the tools push further into the handle, thus defeating the locking mechanism. Their advice in the owner's manual is to somehow "not push the blades [...] any deeper into the handle", but they don't tell how to do this: any sort of rotation of the blade in use pushes in the others on that same hinge.

I bought this tool about 4-5 years ago for one purpose - to take to sea with me on work boats. It has been wonderful. I found some of the problems mentioned by other reviewers, like the blades go too far into the knife making it difficult to get them out - hitting the end of the knife on my palm always seemed to make the nail-nick acessible.

I've considered buying another one in case I drop the first one over-board - GRIN.

PROS: Blades are very sharp and great, in my mind, for the quick carving one might want for 'in the mood' during lunch or in the field.

CONS: I have actually designed this item, years ago, but with swapping out blades. That is, you buy the blades you want and lock them into a folding piece. The problem I have is some of the blades I use as left hand not right hand, so I had to buy two. Now, of course I decided the expense justified the portablility, and still feel so, but HOW NICE it would have been to just swap out blades the way I wanted, that is customize the package.

Price seems a bit high anyway, but correct for the portability aspect. NOT recommended for everyday, at the 'shop' carving, meant to be just a portable item, which, means ya' don't have to cart about or loose a piece.....ergonomically it is ok, including getting the blades in/out...didn't have the problems as the next reviewer did.

Love this piece. Some reviewers had an issue with sliding the blades out; while they can get a little stuck together, I wouldn't take a star away for it. It's got a nice feel in the palm, 6 razor sharp tools (and if you have a flexcut you know it really is razor sharp), and it comes with a slip strop to keep it all sharp. If you're a serious wood carver it's not going to replace your toolbox, but it makes a great addition and a very handy tool if you leave your bench.

This knife arrived ready to carve and razor sharp. The quality is very good just like other Flexcut products. All of the tools lock in place when they are extended. The knife blade is similar to the standard detail knife shape. The tool comes with a large and small scorp about the shape of a #5 gouge. These work well, as long as you only need to use your right hand. The straight chisel works great for small detail work and smoothing cuts. The only push gouge on the tool is a small #9. Last is a "V" gouge that is a little hard to use because once again it is for right hand pull cuts only. This tool wold be better described as a super whittling jack as it is not really set up for carving anything flat or larger than you can hold in your hand. Overall I like the tool, it's just a little different than what I expected. I cary in in my pocket and it has come in handy for all kinds of uses besides whittling!
